10 Ways to Spark Creativity

February 17, 2024 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 3 Comments

Hi there, fellow sewists! Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in a rut with your sewing projects? Do you want to try something new and exciting, but don’t know where to start? If so, this blog post is for you. I’m going to share with you 10 ways to spark creativity in your sewing, and hopefully inspire you to make something amazing. Let’s get started!

Use a different fabric. Sometimes, the easiest way to change things up is to use a different fabric than you usually do. Maybe you always sew with printed quilting cotton that you buy in fat quarter bundles, but have you tried solid colours rather than prints, chambray, linen? Experiment with different textures, colors, and prints, and see how they affect the look and feel of your quilts and projects.

Try a new pattern. Another way to challenge yourself is to try a new pattern that you’ve never made before. Maybe you always sew quilts, but have you tried pillows, table runners, mugrugs, soft toys? Have you tried techniques such as English Paper Piecing; Foundation Paper Piecing; or applique? There are so many patterns out there to choose from, so find one that appeals to you and give it a go.

Add some embellishments. A great way to spice up your sewing is to add some embellishments to your projects. You can use buttons, beads, sequins, lace, embroidery, applique, or anything else that catches your eye. You can either follow a pattern or design your own embellishments. The sky’s the limit!

Mix and match patterns and fabrics. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not mix and match different patterns and fabrics in one project? You can create some interesting contrasts and combinations by doing this. Audition fabrics from your stash and try different combinations than your usual style.

Upcycle old clothes. Another creative idea is to upcycle old clothes that you don’t wear anymore. You can cut them up and make something new out of them. For example, you can turn an old pair of jeans into a bag. Read more about Sustainable Sewing.

Sew with a friend. Sometimes, the best way to get inspired is to sew with a friend. You can either work on the same project together or on different ones and share your progress and feedback. You can also swap fabrics, patterns, or ideas with each other and see what you come up with. Sewing with a friend can be fun, motivating, and educational.

Join a sewing challenge or swap. If you want to connect with other sewists and challenge yourself, you can join a sewing challenge or swap online or in person. There are many sewing communities that organize these events regularly, where you can follow a theme, a prompt, or a rule and make something accordingly. You can also swap fabrics, patterns, or finished projects with other participants and see what they make out of them. Read about sewing gifts for crafty friends.

Learn a new technique. Another way to improve your sewing skills and creativity is to learn a new technique that you’ve never tried before. Maybe you want to learn how to sew a zipper, a buttonhole, or bias binding. Or maybe you want to learn how to do some quilting, embroidery, yoyo’s, or tassels. There are many tutorials and courses online or in person that can teach you these techniques and more.

Make something for someone else. Sometimes, the best way to get out of your comfort zone is to make something for someone else. You can either make something for a friend, a family member, or a charity. You can either ask them what they want or surprise them with something that suits their style and personality. Making something for someone else can be rewarding, satisfying, and fun. Check out our gift guide.

Have fun! Last but not least, the most important way to spark creativity in your sewing is to have fun! Don’t worry too much about the rules, the mistakes, or the outcomes. Just enjoy the process of creating something with your own hands and expressing yourself through your sewing.

I hope these 10 ways to spark creativity in your sewing have given you some inspiration and motivation to try something new and exciting in your next project. Remember that sewing is supposed to be fun and fulfilling, so don’t be afraid to experiment and explore your creativity.

Happy sewing!

I love the zippered pouch. Do you have instructions on how to sew the zipper on the side? I’ve only made one pouch with a zipper. I’m self taught and You Tube is a great help. I do need tutorials/instructions because I just can’t figure things out for myself. Really enjoy your emails and all the creativity you offer.

The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad & Placemat Set show The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad & Placemat Set showcases one of my favourite FPP designs — a stunning kaleidoscope‑style block that always turns out beautifully. Kaleidoscope blocks are some of my most popular FPP patterns, and this set is such a fun way to use them.  This set includes six sizes, making it incredibly versatile: use them as hot pads, trivets, placemats, or simply as a way to add a pop of colour to your kitchen. For these samples, I went with a monochromatic scrap‑busting approach, pairing fabrics from the same colour family with a low‑volume background. The black‑and‑white striped binding adds such a crisp, modern finish. It’s a wonderful project for building your FPP confidence — and a fantastic way to use up those treasured scraps. The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad set is our Pattern of the Week. It is currently 25% off this week in our Pattern Store and Etsy Shop.If you’d like to sew your own set, comment TWIRL and I’ll send the pattern link straight to you.Happy sewing! For those who are new here — hi, I’m Lisa 👋 And th For those who are new here — hi, I’m Lisa 👋 And this is the story of how a simple mother‑daughter blog changed my life.Back in 2008, my 11‑year‑old daughter and I started a little blog to share our sewing, crafts, and baking with family and friends. At the time, I was working as an occupational therapist, and sewing was my creative escape — something fun we could do together. But over the years, that tiny blog grew. I began contributing sewing patterns to books and magazines… I even wrote my own sewing book… And slowly, what started as a hobby became a side hustle — and a dream I quietly held onto. In early 2024, I retired from the public service and finally took the leap into full‑time creative work. Now I’m happily self‑employed in retirement — designing patterns, creating content, and sharing the joy of sewing with this wonderful community. It’s been the most unexpected, fulfilling chapter… and I’m so grateful you’re here.✨ Tell me — what’s YOUR dream job? I’d love to hear your story too. #sewingstory #meetthemaker #creativelife #sewistsofinstagram #sewingcommunity
