Pumpkin Patch {Halloween Applique}

October 20, 2017 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 7 Comments

Pumpkin Patch Halloween Applique is a free project from A Spoonful of Sugar www.aspoonfulofsugardesigns.com

With Halloween just around the corner, this sweet Pumpkin Patch Appliqué is the perfect quick make for adding a cosy seasonal touch to your home. Featuring a trio of pumpkins appliquéd onto a backing fabric, it’s a beginner‑friendly project you can finish in under two hours. Display it in a small photo frame, or stitch it onto a pot holder, mini quilt, tote bag, or coaster for a fun autumn accent.

This updated version includes a cleaner, professionally redrawn template, but the method remains simple, satisfying, and ideal for using small scraps of orange and brown prints.

The pumpkins are stitched using the raw edge appliqué method (also known as sewing illustration) in black cotton which really makes the design pop. You can find the template by clicking on the link here – Pumpkin Patch Template  Alternatively you could draw your own pumpkin trio! You could turn the pumpkins into Jack-O-Lanterns for a fun twist.

✂️ Materials

    • Three orange printed fabrics (pumpkins)
    • Brown fabric (stems)
    • Backing fabric
    • Double‑sided fusible web (e.g., Steam‑A‑Seam 2)
    • Black cotton thread (Aurifil 40 wt recommended)
    • Small photo frame or chosen project base
    • Pumpkin_Patch-Template

  1. 🧵 Method

    1. Prepare the backing Measure the opening of your photo frame (or the surface of your chosen project). Cut the backing fabric to size. For reference, the sample shown uses a Ribba frame from IKEA with a 5½” × 5½” opening.

    2. Trace the appliqué shapes Print the template and trace the pumpkin shapes and stems in reverse onto the paper side of the fusible web. Pumpkin_Patch-Template

    3. Fuse to fabric Cut roughly around each traced shape, leaving about ¼” clearance. Place the fusible web on the wrong side of your fabrics and fuse according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

    4. Cut out the shapes Using small sharp scissors, cut each pumpkin and stem neatly along the traced lines. Remove the paper backing.

    5. Position the appliqué Arrange the pumpkins and stems on the backing fabric using the template as a placement guide. Ensure the design is centred and visually balanced.

    6. Stitch the appliqué Thread your machine with black cotton and set a small straight stitch (1.0–1.5 length). Stitch around each shape approximately ⅛” from the edge, going around 2–3 times to create a sketchy, illustrated outline. Slightly vary your needle placement for a hand‑drawn effect.

    7. Finish the project Press the completed appliqué. Insert into a photo frame or finish as a coaster, mini quilt, or seasonal kitchen accessory.

I downloaded the applique Pumpkin Patch but those are different pumpkins. Perhaps the link is crossed with another? Love the project. Can’t wait to make it.
    Thank you.

Hi Dianne – the link is correct. It should take you to a hand drawn template. This is an older project before I had a graphic designer to reproduce my patterns.
