Festive Soaps

November 8, 2017 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 4 Comments

Festive Soaps - Christmas project by A Spoonful of Sugar www.aspoonfulofsugardesigns.com

I always like to have a few small gifts on hand during the Christmas season. These festive soaps are easy to create – just wrap a scented soap with brown paper, applique a Christmas tree, and tie with bakers twine. These little festive soaps are perfect for stocking stuffers, for Secret Santa gifts, or to give to house guests over the festive season.  If you are like me with a big stash of Christmas fabric, this is a fun project to use those treasured holiday fabric scraps.

If you would like to make your own, here is what you will need:

  • wrapped bars of scented soap
  • kraft brown paper
  • double sided tape
  • bakers twine
  • fabric scraps
  • double sided fusible web such as Steam a Seam 2

I used small bars of wrapped soap that I purchased at K Mart. They measured 3 3/4 x 2 1/4 x 1 inch (approximately).

Firstly cut a rectangle of brown paper so that it is large enough to wrap the soap. I used a piece of paper measuring 6 x 9 inches.

Next, trace a Christmas tree (or another Christmas shape such as star, bells, angel etc)  onto the double sided fusible web. I used a small cookie cutter as a template.  Cut around the shape leaving a clearance of approximately 1/4 inch. Remove the paper backing and adhere the shape to the wrong side of the Christmas fabric. Fuse in place with an iron. Cut around the shape on the traced line.

Peel off the paper backing and adhere to the centre of the brown paper. Fuse in place with the iron. Stitch around the shape using dark colour thread and a short stitch length (i.e. 1.0 – 1.5).  This is a fun project to practice your raw edge applique (also known as sewing illustration).

Wrap the soap using double sided tape and tie with some bakers twine or ribbon.

Gift the festive soaps with a fluffy white hand towel for a sweet hostess gift.

Absolutely love this idea, What a lovely little gift. I have been making soap for a few years now but I’ve never thought of gift wrapping soap in brown paper and incorporating sewing to the wrapping. Very clever idea xx
