Sew your Stash

June 8, 2024 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 1 Comment

Sewists are famous for having a fabric stash that grows faster than our project list — and that’s part of the joy of the hobby. But sewing from your stash can also be incredibly rewarding, economical, and inspiring. Here’s how to make the most of the fabrics you already own.

Sewing enthusiasts often find themselves with a growing collection of fabric scraps and remnants, commonly referred to as a “stash.” While it may seem daunting to tackle this accumulation, sewing from your stash can be incredibly rewarding and beneficial. Here’s a guide to help you navigate your stash and transform it into stunning projects.

Benefits of Sewing from Your Stash
Sewing from your stash is not only a creative challenge but also an economical and sustainable choice. It allows you to repurpose fabrics, reducing waste and saving money. Moreover, it encourages you to be more inventive, as you work with what you have, often leading to unique and personalized creations.

Selecting Fabrics from Different Ranges
When diving into your stash, consider the weight, texture, and drape of the fabrics. Mix and match different types to add interest and contrast to your projects. For instance, combining a sturdy denim with a soft cotton can create a dynamic look. Don’t forget to prewash fabrics to ensure colorfastness and to prevent future shrinkage.

When selecting fabrics, choose designs with both small and larger scale print for variety. I like to include low volume fabrics, polka dots, ginghams, solids, geometrics, and florals. You can use multi colours or keep to a monochromatic colour scheme.

Making It Easier to See Your Stash
Organizing your stash can significantly improve your sewing experience. Consider using clear bins or a dedicated shelving system to sort your fabrics by color, type, or project. Labeling each section will help you quickly locate the perfect piece for your next project. Additionally, folding fabrics uniformly or using a filing system can make your stash visually accessible and easy to navigate.

Additional Tips for Sewing with Stash Fabrics

  • Plan Your Projects: Before you start, have a clear idea of what you want to create. This will help you select the most suitable fabrics from your stash.
  • Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to combine different patterns and colors. This can lead to exciting and unexpected results.
  • Use a Design Wall: A design wall or a large flat surface can help you arrange and rearrange fabrics until you find the perfect composition.
  • Embrace Imperfections: Part of the charm of using stash fabrics is the story each piece tells. Small imperfections can add character to your project.
  • Stay Inspired: Keep a mood board or a Pinterest board to gather ideas and inspiration for using your stash in creative ways.

Remember, your fabric stash is a treasure trove of potential. With these tips, you can unlock the possibilities and enjoy the process of creating something beautiful from what you already own. Happy sewing!
