Halloween Treat Bags

September 21, 2013 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 6 Comments

Every year Halloween seems to be more popular in our neighbourhood. It is fun seeing all the kids dressed up in their costumes. This year we are making some quick and easy Halloween treat bags. Made from some unbleached calico with a felt pumpkin appliqué and tied with raffia, they are perfectly sized to hold some treats.

Materials (per bag)

  • unbleached calico – 2 pieces measuring 4 1/2 x 8 inches
  • scrap of orange, green and black felt
  • 1 yard of raffia
  • black cotton
Equipment:
  • sewing machine
  • black cotton
  • pinking shears
  • glue
Cut out a pumpkin shape from the orange felt. Pumpkin should measure approx 2 inch in width x 1 1/2 inch in height with a 1/2 inch stem. Cut a green stem. Position the pumpkin and green stem on a piece of calico so that it is centred and the pumpkin is approx 1 1/2 inch above the bottom edge. Top stitch around the edge of the pumpkin using black thread. Cut out eyes/nose/mouth from black felt. Glue felt eyes/nose/mouth in place on the pumpkin. Allow to dry.
Layer the front and back of the treat bag. Stitch around the sides and bottom using black thread and a 3/8 inch seam allowance. Trim seam allowance using pinking shears.
Fill bag with treats. Cut raffia into 12 inch lengths. Tie around bag to secure.

Just made one of these, thank you for the idea! I was stuck as to what to put some halloween themed sweets in, for a swap that I am taking part in and this is just the job. Sue x

Cute project for Halloween treats! I don’t think I could enough of these to keep up with as many trick-or-treaters as we get in our neighborhood. Sure is fun to check out their costumes, isn’t it. These would be great for a Halloween party.
