Fabric Covered Bobbins

A lovely bundle of fabric was just what I needed to inspire me to head back into the sewing room after a lengthy break. I am putting the finishing touches to a new pattern using this sweet bundle of Cottage fabric by Tilda.  As usual, I like to use all the fabric and not waste even a scrap! Inspired by the bobbins of Stitching Notes and Meari’s Musings, I covered wooden cotton reels/spools and card bobbins with my project “scraps”.

The fabric covered bobbins are a super quick project and they can be made in around 5 minutes each. All you need is:

• double sided adhesive sheets
• fabric (I used Cottage by Tilda)
• wooden cotton reels/spools
• card bobbins  – they are available in a range of sizes (or you can trace your own onto thick cardstock)

Simply trace around the reel or bobbin on the double sided adhesive. Cut around the traced shape leaving a margin of approximately 1/2 inch. Peel off the back of the adhesive sheet, and adhere to the wrong side of the fabric. Cut out the traced shape using fine pointed scissors, like embroidery or applique scissors. Adhere the fabric to the reel or bobbin and smooth it out with your fingers so that it is well adhered.

Fabric covered bobbins are such a fun project. The bobbins and reels are extra pretty with their fabric embellishment. They are perfect little photo props, and look extra sweet in your sewing box. These would be fun little extra’s to pop into a swap package or gift for a sewing friend.
