Colourful Patchwork Basket and Bags Blog Hop

May 21, 2016 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 3 Comments

Colorful Patchwork Bags and Baskets Class on my Pattern Shop
I love patchwork projects – there is something so satisfying about combining a variety of fabrics to create a one of a kind item. My friend, Caroline Fairbanks-Critchfield, from the popular Sew Can She site and the co-author of Just For You: Selfish Sewing from your favourite Sew Can She Bloggers, has recently launched a new Craftsy Class – Colorful Patchwork Bags & Baskets. This class is designed to teach you quick and easy methods to sew adorable patchwork baskets, totes, and pouches. I couldn’t resist making the patchwork basket.

Flower Sugar Carnival by Lecien Fabric

Caroline’s method uses gridded interfacing to easily stitch up a trio of projects. The great feature of her technique, is that the projects can be easily scaled in size to create bags and baskets of any size. Caroline sent me a bundle of gridded interfacing and some other interfacings to try, as well as a link to her class.

This was the first Craftsy class I have taken. It was well put together and consisted of six different lessons to guide you through the projects. Caroline introduces you to all of her tips and tricks to achieve perfect results. This class would be perfect for a beginner sewist who would like to learn the basics, but would also be valuable to more experienced sewists to learns a new method of construction. I have not used gridded interfacing previously but it certainly helped achieve quick and accurate results. What I love about the class is that you can easily stop, start, and rewind, and you can always re watch it at any time. You have Caroline guiding you through each stage of construction. The class comes with a 9 page resource guide which includes detailed instructions, tips, and sizing guide. The other feature of Craftsy classes is that you can ask questions of the tutor if you have any queries or need anything clarified.

I made a patchwork basket using 4 inch squares of Flower Sugar Carnival (which is a new range by Lecien Fabrics and will be in stores in October 2016). It is such a pretty range and the cheerful florals and polka dots would be perfect for a basket. Instead of making fabric handles, I substituted some lovely red and white webbing that I had available.

My patchwork basket will be perfect for storing sewing supplies or yarn! These baskets could also make a lovely gift basket, filled with a gift or care package for someone special.

Next on my list is to make one of the totes. I would recommend Colorful Patchwork Bags & Baskets to both beginner and intermediate sewists. You will be making colourful totes and baskets in next to no time!

Disclosure: I was provided with a free Craftsy class and some interfacing supplies to assist with the review of this class. All opinions are my own.
