Sewing Tool Roundup #4

October 23, 2015 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 6 Comments

Sewing Tool Roundup featuring a review of new sewing tools and products.

Welcome to our fourth Sewing Tool Roundup where we showcase new, or new to us, sewing and quilting supplies and notions.  Check out our previous Sewing Tool reviews here,  here, and here. With Christmas coming, you will find some great products to add to your wish list!

Superbob’s, by Superior Threads, are prewound bobbins with cardboard sides which are compatible with a wide range of sewing machines. They use 60wt polyester cotton in a wide range of colours. The fine thread is perfect for appliqué, English Paper Piecing,  sewing, embroidery, and quilting.  They are available in this donut, which is perfect for storage, so you always have the colours on hand when you are paper piecing. As the thread is so fine the stitches are practically invisible. I got my Superbobs from Massdrop.

Tulip pins are made in Japan by Hiroshima Needles who are known for their high quality needles and pins. They are beautifully packaged in glass tubes and boxes, and make lovely gifts. The pink tulip pins are best for thin fabric such as thin cotton, silk and lining; the yellow tulip pins are recommended for cotton fabrics; and the glass headed pins are recommended for patchwork. These are a lovely set of pins for all your sewing needs. The glass headed pins are heat resistant and the tulip pins have a cellulose head so you are unable to iron directly on them. I have been using these pins recently and they are both pretty and practical! Tulips pins are available from Sew Nana’s Place and Massdrop.

Gingher Stork Embroidery Scissors are perfect for cutting threads and come with a leather sheath to cover the sharp tip of the scissors. They are lovely sharp scissors for embroidery and appliqué. They make a lovely gift for anyone who loves embroidery, cross stitch or paper piecing. I bought the silver pair from Michaels and the gold pair came from Massdrop.

Omnigrid Project Case is perfect for anyone who attends sewing/quilting classes or retreats. It is a handy travel case with lots of pockets to hold all of your sewing essentials – including a ruler, small cutting mat, rotary cutter, pins and more! The base has a strap to hold your patchwork blocks flat and your fabrics in place. This would make a great gift for a quilter. I am looking forward to road testing mine on my next quilting retreat. I received my Omnigrid Project Case from Massdrop.

The Omnigrid Portable Cutting and Pressing Station is another great product for quilters on the go! It is a convenient size for trimming, foundation piecing, or small patchwork projects. Once side is a gridded self healing mat and the other side is a non stick pressing surface – a cutting and pressing station in one! This is great for classes and travel, or to set up in your sewing room next to your machine. It measures 12 x 18 inches (when closed)and  has handles and a velcro closure. This is such a handy product, I don’t know how I managed without it. My sewing space is in my guest room and space is tight so this is a great addition. I received my Omnigrid Portable Cutting and Pressing Station from Massdrop.

LOVE Tulip pins and needles! They are worth the higher price. I first used the applique needles when working with felted wool, and could not believe how smoothly they worked through the fabric. Been hooked ever since (although I am still, and will always, remain loyal to Piecemaker’s for Betweens hand quilting needles).

So disappointed that my omnigrid cutting pressing station warped into an almost completely useless bowl like shape. Wasn’t even exposed to that much heat…so not sure what happened. Before that occurred I absolutely loved the convenience of having it beside my machine and it saved me a 100 get up to the ironing board trips a day

Oh really – that is such a shame Carol! Is it still under warranty? I haven’t been using mine for too long so no problems so far.

I love all the tools but the Omnigrid portable cutting and pressing station is the best.
