Quilting Fiction

July 1, 2010 By Spoonful of Sugar - 22 Comments

Both of my jobs have been super busy this week which hasn’t left a lot of time or energy for crafty pursuits. Coupled with the cold weather we have been having, my evenings have been spent in front of the heater reading The Aloha Quilt, the latest addition to the Elm Creek Quilt Series by Jennifer Chiaverini. This book follows the adventures of Bonnie, one of the original Elm Creek Quilters as she travels to Hawaii, and includes some interesting history of Hawaiian quilts.

The Quilters Apprentice was the first fiction quilting book I read, and I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer Chiaverini at the Houston Quilt Market in 2000. Since then I have discovered a whole genre of quilting fiction. Some of my favourites are The Diary of Mattie Spenser; the Benni Harper Mystery Series;  and the Persian Pickle Club. I haven’t been reading as much in recent years since I have started sewing more obsessively:) I would love some recommendations of other quilty fiction that I should look out for!

Anyway, before I head off to read my latest pile of library books, I just wanted to show you the lovely bibs that Liz from  Lzilulu has made based on my Boutique Baby Bibs tutorial. Love the rural setting that she has photographed them in.

You can find my tutorial for Boutique Baby Bibs here.

Hope to have more sewing/crafty things to share next week. School holidays start here tomorrow and I have two weeks off – can’t wait!

Try Alice’s Tulips by Sandra Dallas. You have a few here I haven’t read. I’ll be adding them to my list. Very cute bibs.

I wish our library had such wonderful books! I don’t think they even have quilting books or maybe from 1980 LOL

Lucky you to have such awesome books at your library. All the crafty/sewing/decorating books at mine are at least a decade old. Enjoy your books…I have the bottom 2 and they are great!

I see that Sandra Dallas is on here more than once. I would add her Prayers for Sale–maybe my favorite of her books.

I got to see Jennifer Chiaverini speak when her very first book came out! Would you believe she actually lives in the same city I do? She has a lot of books out now. I echo the other comments with my love for all Sandra Dallas books!

    Hi sweetheart!

Oh gosh, nothing springs to mind at the moment although I have been enjoying a book by SARK called Make your creative dreams real. It’s more a self-help, positive affirmation kind of book which is good to dip into on occasion!

Those bibs are too cute! Just in time too as I have a friend about to have her first baby… I’ve just been out and purchased some fabrics for her cot quilt, so now need to get the old grey matter working!!! I’m off to QFD now, thanks for hte heads up!

Have a great weekend Lisa! Sorry for the long ‘blabber’!!!! 🙂

    Hugs! Vikki xx

I’m such a scatterbrain sometimes! I thought that the lady who’d made the bibs had designed them too… but now realise that it was you! What am I like? Shall I get out of bed and start the day again?!!! LOL

Beautiful design Lisa! And here is the THANK YOU that I should have said in my earlier message! 🙂

Oh it’s a worry isnt’ it?!!!

Quilting fiction sounds interesting. We are still waiting for local library to be built (it’s completion date is next Spring)and I can’t wait to borrow books to read.

I love the bibs, the apples are very cute.

Thanks for sharing what titles you’re into. I have my own little stack on the go here. Just finished One Thin Thread. Nothing quite like some good quilting fiction. :o)

Hope you’re enjoying your 2 weeks off!

You might like Monica Ferris. She writes mysteries and the backdrop for her stories is a needle craft store. It’s more about needlepoint, cross stitch, knit and crochet, but they’re well written and interesting. They give a lot of detail about the crafts, which I like. I also like Sandra Dallas – Alice’s Tulips is good, and The Persian Pickle Club wasn’t bad after I got used to the stupid names she gives her characters. The Benni Harper mysteries are interesting but not really quilt related, other than the titles and the occasional mention of quilts. But I guess I can’t judge too harshly. I’ve only read the first one. My favorites by far are the Elm Creek series – every single one of them. I discovered them about a year ago and had the privilege of reading through in order one right after another. Now when she comes out with a new one I have to re-orient myself to the characters and plot. It was easier when I could just read through them as I got to them :)Hope that helps!

Sharing a closer look at the Handy Drawstring Pouc Sharing a closer look at the Handy Drawstring Pouch today — a sweet little project that’s as practical as it is pretty. I stitched this one in the blue and gold colourway of the Tilda Songbird collection and love how the soft watercolour florals shine in a small make. The pouch features cleverly shaped panels (with no boxed corners), stands tall when in use, and folds completely flat for storage. It’s also reversible, which makes it such a fun and versatile sew.   These little pouches are perfect for organising your sewing room, gifting to a friend, or popping into a project bag.The pattern includes three sizes, and you can find it in both my Pattern Store and Etsy shop. Comment HANDY and I’ll send the link straight to your inbox.A big thank you to @tilda_australia for gifting the beautiful fabric.#tildasongbird #drawstringbagpattern #aspoonfulofsugardesigns #tildafabrics #sewingproject
