Penguin Love Mugrug

Penguin Love Mug Rug – A Sweet Stitch for Any Season

If you’re looking for a quick, cheerful project to brighten your sewing table, the Penguin Love Mug Rug is one of my favourites to make and gift. It’s beginner‑friendly, scrap‑friendly, and absolutely adorable — the kind of project that brings a smile the moment you set your cup of tea down.

This little penguin has been keeping me company lately, including on my recent travels through the South Island of New Zealand. From lakeside picnics to cosy café stops, Penguin Love came along for the adventure — and I can confirm he looks right at home anywhere.

❄️ What Is the Penguin Love Mug Rug?

The Penguin Love Mug Rug is a small quilted mat designed to hold your mug and a little treat. It features a sweet penguin created using raw‑edge appliqué, a technique that’s wonderfully accessible for beginners and satisfying for experienced sewists too.

The design is simple, modern, and playful — perfect for winter sewing, holiday gifting, or just adding a touch of whimsy to your everyday routine.

✂️ Beginner Friendly + Scrap Friendly

One of the things I love most about this project is how approachable it is.

  • Beginner friendly:
The shapes are easy to cut, the stitching is forgiving, and the project comes together quickly.
  • Scrap friendly:
You only need small pieces of fabric for the penguin’s body, wings, beak, and heart. It’s a wonderful way to use up those favourite little leftovers you’ve been saving.
  • Gift ready:
Pair it with a mug, some tea, or a sweet treat and you have a thoughtful handmade gift in under an hour.

🧵 Raw‑Edge Appliqué Technique

The penguin is created using raw‑edge appliqué, which gives the design a soft, slightly textured look. Simply fuse your shapes in place, stitch around the edges, and watch your penguin come to life. It’s a relaxed, enjoyable technique — perfect for slow stitching with a cup of tea nearby.

👀 Two Options for the Eyes

You can finish the eyes in whichever way suits your style and tools:

1. Embroidered Eyes

A few simple stitches give your penguin a sweet, handmade expression.

2. Iron‑On Vinyl Eyes (SVG Included!)

The pattern includes an SVG file, so you can cut perfect little eyes using your digital cutting machine.
This option gives you crisp, consistent results every time — especially handy if you’re making a batch for gifts or markets.

🎨 Which Penguin Are You — Classic or Colourful?

I’d love to know your favourite style:

  • Classic black and white, like a real penguin
  • Or something more colourful, using playful prints or bright scraps?

Both versions have their own charm, and it’s fun to see how personality shines through with different fabrics.

🐧 Penguin Love on the Road

During my recent trip around the South Island of New Zealand, Penguin Love came along for the journey. He popped into photos at scenic lookouts, cosy cabins, and lakeside tea breaks. There’s something delightful about bringing a handmade friend along on your travels — a reminder of home, creativity, and the joy of making.

💛 Ready to Stitch Your Own?

Whether you’re sewing for yourself or making a gift for someone special, the Penguin Love Mug Rug is a quick, heartwarming project that’s sure to bring joy. You can find the pattern in our Pattern Store and Etsy Shop for immediate download.
