I Heart Chicken Scratch

July 28, 2011 By Spoonful of Sugar - 18 Comments

It hasn’t been a very productive week for me creatively. Somehow getting back into the work/school routine has left little time or energy for creating.

But have had a little time to work on my Chicken Scratch project –

Hope to be back on the weekend with the finished item. I love how the bright aqua gingham gives it a more modern look.

You can check out another Chicken Scratch Project that I made here, and my Grandmother’s apron here. This was my first introduction to embroidery as a child – the gingham squares make it easy to achieve nice even stitches. I made a tablecloth using this technique when I was in primary school – I wish I had kept it.

I’ve never heard of this type of embroidery before! It’s wonderful. Is there a good book that teaches how to do it? Yours looks so fresh and pretty. Loads of love, Amanda xxx

Ah! The memories of my first attempts at ‘chicken scratch’ (just didn’t know the name!) My first tablecloth was in aqua and white and I didn’t keep mine either! The red is a fresh and modern touch! Very pretty!

I have not heard it called chicken scratch either. Maybe it’s not a US thing? Like the color scheme.

Sharing a closer look at the Handy Drawstring Pouc Sharing a closer look at the Handy Drawstring Pouch today — a sweet little project that’s as practical as it is pretty. I stitched this one in the blue and gold colourway of the Tilda Songbird collection and love how the soft watercolour florals shine in a small make. The pouch features cleverly shaped panels (with no boxed corners), stands tall when in use, and folds completely flat for storage. It’s also reversible, which makes it such a fun and versatile sew.   These little pouches are perfect for organising your sewing room, gifting to a friend, or popping into a project bag.The pattern includes three sizes, and you can find it in both my Pattern Store and Etsy shop. Comment HANDY and I’ll send the link straight to your inbox.A big thank you to @tilda_australia for gifting the beautiful fabric.#tildasongbird #drawstringbagpattern #aspoonfulofsugardesigns #tildafabrics #sewingproject
