Summer is the perfect season to slow down, relax, and spend quality time doing what you love—sewing! Whether you’re taking a break from work, enjoying the school holidays, or just craving a creative reset, now’s a wonderful time to start something new. It’s also the ideal opportunity to teach kids to sew or brush up on techniques you’ve been meaning to master.

What to Sew in Summer
Think light, bright, and easy when it comes to summer sewing projects. Here are a few ideas that are perfect for warmer days:
- Mug rugs for sipping iced tea in style
- Picnic accessories like napkins, placemats, and cutlery rolls
- Glasses cases to protect sunnies on sunny adventures
- Tote bags and pouches for beach days, markets, or travel
- Lightweight zipper bags for packing snacks, sunscreen, or art supplies
- Table decor like cheerful coasters or runners for al fresco dining
When choosing fabrics, opt for pastel or bright colours—think lemon yellow, bubblegum pink, aqua blue, and grassy green. Add a dose of whimsy with summer motifs like citrus fruits, ice cream, gingham, florals, palm leaves, and seashells.

Adapt to Summer Weather
Sewing in summer is all about staying cool and comfortable while you create. Try stitching during the cooler parts of the day—early mornings or evenings—and keep a cold drink nearby to stay refreshed. A fan or air conditioner can make a big difference, and if you’re working near open windows or outdoors, don’t forget to use pattern weights to stop your fabric from taking flight! On breezy days, take your hand sewing outside and enjoy some sunshine while you stitch—it’s a lovely way to relax and make the most of the season. Portable projects are great to do near the pool.
