Product Review: SOHMO Shears, Scissors & Pins

July 27, 2019 By A Spoonful of Sugar - Leave a Comment

Quality sewing tools make all the difference to achieving professional results with your sewing projects. I am always on the look out for new and improved tools and equipment to make time spent in my sewing room more enjoyable. I don’t get as much time as I would like in my sewing room these days now I work full time, so I want everything to run smoothly.

Luxe is what comes to mind when you use the beautiful range of tailor’s shears and scissors by SOHMO. Forged from carbon steel and plated with 24 karat gold, they are made in Italy and designed to last a lifetime. The quality of the tools is wonderful and they are a dream to use.

I have been road testing the scissors and shears over the past weeks, and they have been a delight to work with. All of the scissors come with a microfibre cloth for cleaning/maintaining the scissors, and they are packaged in a sturdy box. The design of the packaging is gorgeous – pretty pastel boxes and tins – they look gorgeous on my sewing table.

The large, 10 Inch tailoring shears have offset handles which are comfortable to hold and allow you to cut with precision. They are strong and sturdy, and allow you to cut through multiple layers of fabrics. These scissors are perfect for dressmaking.

The 8 inch tailoring shears have one knife edged blade and one serrated edge blade, giving greater control over a range of fabric types. Durable and sharp, they make cutting fabric effortless.

The Ricamo Embroidery scissors are a perfect for embroidery. I have been leaving them next to my sewing machine to snip threads. They have sharp 4 inch blades. I love their modern design/shape. It feels very special to use gold plated scissors.

The Lecco Embroidery scissors have a 3.5 inch blade and have a more classical design. These scissors are also super sharp and perfect for embroidery, cross stitch, or English paper piecing. I have been using them as I work on a new English Paper Piecing project in front of the TV at night.

One of the lovely features of the SOHMO range of tools is their beautiful packaging. The scissors are packed in gorgeous pastel coloured boxes with foam inserts to protect them, and come complete with a microfibre cloth for cleaning, and care instructions. They really are presented beautifully for gift giving and will last a lifetime.

The pins come in adorable pastel coloured tins, with a sliding lid, and are both pretty and practical. These pins would make a lovely gift for a sewing friend (or a gift for yourself – you deserve it!!)

  • Entomology Pins have a fine shaft and sharp point, and are perfect for fine/delicate fabrics such as Liberty lawns;
  • Glass head pins are perfect for a range of sewing projects. I have used them with quilting and small sewing projects and they were sharp and easy to use. The glass heads are melt proof if using with an iron.
  • Basting pins are curved safety pins for quilting.

If you would like more information on the SOHMO range and stockists, head to their website. Make sure you are following SOHMO and aspoonfulsugar on Instagram. There will be an instagram giveaway next week so stay tuned!

Disclaimer: Thanks to SOHMO for providing the shears, scissors, and pins used in this review. All opinions are our own.
