Hexagon Coasters

Hexagon Coasters Sewing Tutorial by A Spoonful of Sugar

Do you love home renovating shows? Sarah and I have recently started watching House Rules which is inspiring us to make changes around our home to give it a more modern, updated look. Sarah is on her inter-semester break, so has been busy painting her room this week. She painted the walls a fresh white shade which makes it so much brighter. She has purchased some new linen and accessories for her room. Her colour scheme is soft with lots of pale mint, blush pink, and aqua, with touches of charcoal and black. Hexagons are also a feature.

Sarah asked me to make a couple of coasters that she can use on her desk and bedside table, to rest her cup of tea. We raided my stash to find some suitable fabrics that matched her new quilt cover. I made some quick reversible quilted hexagon coasters that feature different fabrics on each side and are bordered with a geometric black and white print.

If you would like to make your own, you will need (per coaster)

  • two printed cotton fabrics, measuring at least 6 x 6 inches
  • scrap of batting measuring at least 6 x 6 inches
  • fat quarter of fabric for the binding
  • Hexagon Template

1. Cut fabrics – cut the cotton fabric into squares measuring 6 x 6 inches; cut the batting into a 6 x 6 inch square; cut the binding fabric into two strips measuring 2 1/4 inches.

2. Using the template, cut the top fabric into a hexagon shape. Layer the bottom fabric face down on the table. Position the batting on top, and then lastly add the main fabric with the right side facing upwards. Use safety pins or basting spray to hold the layers together. Quilt as desired using a long stitch length. I quilted random lines of varying widths across the hexagon and then added a few lines going in another direction for added interest. Trim the coaster into a hexagon.

3. Stitch the two binding strips together using a mitred seam. Attach the binding around the outside as you would on a quilt, mitering the corners. Hand stitch the binding to the back of the coaster.

Hexagon coasters are a quick project and are great little mug rugs to use around your home.

They are different to my usual colours but they do work well together. They are a good size for a mug or glass.

Sharing a closer look at the Handy Drawstring Pouc Sharing a closer look at the Handy Drawstring Pouch today — a sweet little project that’s as practical as it is pretty. I stitched this one in the blue and gold colourway of the Tilda Songbird collection and love how the soft watercolour florals shine in a small make. The pouch features cleverly shaped panels (with no boxed corners), stands tall when in use, and folds completely flat for storage. It’s also reversible, which makes it such a fun and versatile sew.   These little pouches are perfect for organising your sewing room, gifting to a friend, or popping into a project bag.The pattern includes three sizes, and you can find it in both my Pattern Store and Etsy shop. Comment HANDY and I’ll send the link straight to your inbox.A big thank you to @tilda_australia for gifting the beautiful fabric.#tildasongbird #drawstringbagpattern #aspoonfulofsugardesigns #tildafabrics #sewingproject
