My favourite type of sewing project is something that uses my scraps or the fabric I have on hand and is practical. My latest pattern ticks all the boxes! Pretty and practical, the Twirling Treasures Kitchen Set is ideal to use as hot pads, pot holders, placemats, mugrugs, heat pads and more! Featuring a foundation paper pieced twirling block, the mats look really effective and can be made to suit a modern, country style, or traditional decor.

I made my Twirling Treasures kitchen set in jewel tones using fabrics from my scrap baskets. I went for an “organised scrappy” approach. I made them using one colour family but divided the block into four tones. e.g. navy, teal, dark blue, and blue/grey. This way they looked cohesive yet still used more than 24 fabrics in each pad. I coordinated the colours with white low volume fabrics. I used a lovely black and white striped fabric for the binding and a white print with black polka dots for the backing.

The pattern discussed the types of batting required to make them heat safe. They are perfect for protecting counter tops and table tops from hot casserole dishes and plates.

The blocks are constructed using the foundation paper piecing technique. Also included is a handy guide to FPP to get you started. This block is suitable for beginners.

You can find the Twirling Treasures Kitchen Set pattern in our Pattern Store and Etsy Shop. The pattern includes 6 sizes so you can easily make a set to meet your needs. They also make lovely gifts for friends.
