This and That

August 11, 2009 By Spoonful of Sugar - 48 Comments

Thanks for all the wonderful comments on my String Quilt – you made my day with all the lovely feedback. Sorry I am a bit behind in my comment answering lately – life sometimes gets too busy – but we wanted you to know that we always read and appreciate every single comment!

I have been working on a few quick projects since completing the quilt. First up was this tote and matching tissue cover for my Mum to take to the library and shopping. Many of the stores here in WA are encouraging us to be more eco-friendly by charging for bags. The tote I made my Mum last year was in need of an update.

I am most excited that Spotlight is now stocking some Heather Bailey scrap booking supplies and Martha Stewart products. I used the Pop Garden paper and fabric to make this little gift. You can find the “how to” here.

My fabulous son celebrated his 15th birthday last week. We have a tradition in our family that the birthday person gets to choose their favourite meal on their birthday. This year a lemon meringue pie was requested – I must say it was a great choice! My son is also creative in his own way – on the weekend he competed in the state finals of Robocup (computer programmed Lego competition) and his team came third! I knew all those years of lego building would come in handy one day!!

Happy birthday to your son! 15 already, wow. And still a lego fan? Here I sometimes sigh because of all the lego everywhere. I mean.. EVERYwhere. I step on it, I trip over it, and when I try to put it away, I always seem to hold that vital little piece that he really, really needs to finish up some masterwork. I’m just trying to let go now. I think I have to 🙂

Love the bag by the way. Your mom must be very happy with it! And a meringue pie. Oh my. That sounds delicious!

Oh yes! I loved the Heather Bailey range at Spotlight too. I was very good though, I only bought rub ons. But it was only because I had already about $150 worth of fabrics in my trolley.

Next time I go back, I will pick up some papers and ribbons too.

Swipe for a little trip down memory lane.Back in 2016, my priorities were firmly centred around family. I was working full‑time, sewing in the guest room, sharing tutorials on my blog, and slowly dipping my toes into selling a handful of patterns on Etsy. It was a busy, full season — and creativity was something I fitted in around everything else.  Fast forward to 2026… I’m now retired and living the creative life I once dreamed of. My kids have grown up and are living in their own homes nearby. My husband and I are free to travel, explore, and enjoy this stage of life. And I get to spend my days designing, sewing, and connecting with this beautiful community.Life looks different now — in the best possible way. Were you following me back then, or what has changed for you over the past 10 years? If you’ve ever wanted to add eyelets or grommets t If you’ve ever wanted to add eyelets or grommets to your sewing projects, here’s a quick look at how I install them using my DK93 snap press. It’s the same tool I use for snaps — and it makes installing eyelets beautifully quick and consistent. For this Ribbon Pouch, I used the Liberty Gifts from the Garden collection (printed on Lasenby cotton and released in January 2026).
