Spinning Economy Block

Spinning Economy Block – A Modern FPP Twist on a Classic

If you love the timeless charm of the traditional Economy Block but crave a fresh, modern spin, you’re going to adore my latest foundation paper piecing (FPP) pattern: the Spinning Economy Block!

This dynamic design adds movement and flair to a classic favorite, making it perfect for showcasing bold prints, gradients, or even your treasured fabric scraps. Whether you’re new to FPP or a seasoned stitcher, this pattern is designed to be beginner-friendly, versatile, and fun to sew.

🧵 What You Can Make with the Spinning Economy Block

The possibilities are endless! Use your blocks to create:

  • Eye-catching mini quilts or wall hangings
  • Stylish mug rugs or placemats
  • Unique cushion covers
  • A bold quilt top with spinning symmetry
  • Scrappy table runners for seasonal flair

Whether you’re sewing one block or a whole series, the Spinning Economy Block is perfect for mixing and matching fabrics, experimenting with color placement, and creating movement in your projects.

📐 Pattern Features

Here’s what’s included in the Spinning Economy Block pattern:

  • ✅ Five block sizes: 3″, 4″, 5″, 6″, and 7″ – perfect for everything from small gifts to full quilts
  • ✅ Beginner-friendly instructions with clear diagrams and step-by-step guidance
  • ✅ Printable colouring page to help you plan your fabric layout and audition color combinations
  • ✅ Scrap-friendly design that makes the most of your stash
  • ✅ Instant digital download so you can start sewing right away

💡 Tips for Perfect Foundation Paper Piecing

If you’re new to FPP or want to refine your technique, here are a few tips to help you get crisp, accurate results:

  • ✂️ Use a thin needle (e.g., 90/14) and shorten your stitch length to 1.5–1.8mm. This makes the paper easier to tear away and keeps your seams secure.
  • 📏 Pre-cut your fabric pieces generously to avoid frustration. It’s better to trim down than come up short!
  • 🔁 Always fold and crease your paper along the seam line before trimming—this helps with alignment and reduces bulk.
  • 🧼 Press, don’t iron. Use a dry iron and press firmly without dragging to avoid distorting the paper.
  • 🧩 Work in sequence and double-check placement before stitching—especially when working with directional prints.

🎨 Make It Yours

The Spinning Economy Block is a perfect canvas for creativity. Try:

  • Using ombre fabrics for a gradient effect
  • Mixing low-volume backgrounds with bold centers
  • Creating a rainbow layout across multiple blocks
  • Adding embellishments or embroidery for extra personality

Ready to spin into your next project? You can find the Spinning Economy Block pattern in my pattern shop and Etsy Store so you can start stitching today. I can’t wait to see how you make it your own—be sure to tag me on Instagram @aspoonfulsugar so I can cheer you on!
