Mini Chef Aprons

March 12, 2016 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 22 Comments

Have you sewn with laminate fabric? It is a useful fabric for raincoats, hats, bags, zippered pouches and more.Laminate is different to vinyl in that the underside is a cotton fabric and the top has a plastic coating. When sewing laminate, simple shapes work best. If you sew with the laminated side facing upwards, it can stick to the underside of the sewing machine foot. There are ways to combat this, such as using a teflon foot or sewing with greaseproof paper on top of the laminate that you tear away after sewing. I prefer to use bias binding on the edges so it glides through the machine with ease.  I use Wonder Clips to hold the layers together. Avoid pins as they can leave holes in the laminate.

Radiant Girl, the cute, retro inspired fabric range designed by Koko Seki for Lecien Fabrics, features umbrellas, rabbits, hearts, flowers and more. It is now being released as a laminate fabric. I used this new fabric range to sew a couple of Mini Chef Aprons.

Apron 1

I based these mini chef aprons on some I made my daughter when she was a pre-schooler. She used to love to “help” in the kitchen and this style of apron is easy for little ones to pull on themselves , without any fiddly ties.

Apron 2

I made bias binding from the coordinating Radiant Girl cotton range. I love how the plaid fabric looks as a bias trim.

Apron 3

I love the pink rabbit laminate. It was a little tricky to photograph but there is actually little silvery glitter hearts on the laminate – so cute!

Apron 5Apron 6

I added a piece of ribbon in the side seam as a little label.

Apron 7

Radiant Girl laminate will be released in Spring 2016.

Disclaimer: Thanks to Lecien Fabric for supplying the fabric used in this project.

Hi Vicki – I drafted the pattern myself based on one I made my daughter when she was younger. I haven’t drawn it up properly at this stage – hopefully in the future when my design skills have improved.

This pattern would even be great for an adult short apron top. I also made my daughter a play outfit from a pattern like this but I am almost positive I no longer have it. Great job and I love the laminated fabric. How cool is that?

Now you mention it Carol, my Nan used to have a short apron top like this that wore when she made her famous pumpkin scones 🙂 The laminated fabric is excellent – I am sure I will be making more laminated items now.

There used to be a little girls sundress that used this same idea. Don’t know if it is still available

A sundress would be lovely in this style Virginia! It is 40 degrees C here today so I could use a sundress myself 🙂

Sharing a closer look at the Handy Drawstring Pouc Sharing a closer look at the Handy Drawstring Pouch today — a sweet little project that’s as practical as it is pretty. I stitched this one in the blue and gold colourway of the Tilda Songbird collection and love how the soft watercolour florals shine in a small make. The pouch features cleverly shaped panels (with no boxed corners), stands tall when in use, and folds completely flat for storage. It’s also reversible, which makes it such a fun and versatile sew.   These little pouches are perfect for organising your sewing room, gifting to a friend, or popping into a project bag.The pattern includes three sizes, and you can find it in both my Pattern Store and Etsy shop. Comment HANDY and I’ll send the link straight to your inbox.A big thank you to @tilda_australia for gifting the beautiful fabric.#tildasongbird #drawstringbagpattern #aspoonfulofsugardesigns #tildafabrics #sewingproject
