Holiday Sewing

May 2, 2011 By Spoonful of Sugar - 25 Comments

After a few weeks of working on some design projects, I just felt like some straight forward sewing over the weekend. I made up a couple more pairs of pyjama pants, something I desperately needed now we are finally getting some cooler weather.

I also made up some Fold Up Eco Bags using the pattern from I Love Patchwork. These are a great stash buster project and will be good to pop in with gifts.  I love the inbuilt pouch for storing the folded bag when not in use.

I have been wanting a new long term scrap quilt project to work on – something that I can just pick up for a few minutes at a time after work etc when I feel like some repetitive sewing. I have been quite taken with the Butterfly Scrap Quilt that is in From Quilters Studio, a Japanese sewing book (see image below) . More recently, I have also seen quilts made in this style here, and here.

The blocks measure 4 1/2 inches and I used the foundation paper piecing method. I think it will keep my busy for a while and should be a great scrap buster.

I received a lovely order of Japanese fabrics today from SuperBuzzy. Some Suzuko Koseki (love everything with vintage sewing supplies);

some cute Love Bugs and Darla Horses

and some Echino fabric. Sarah thought this fabric would make a perfect table runner with its colourful repeating pattern – it will brighten up our meals area over winter.

Sadly it is back to work for me on Thursday.

    Oooh, those fold up bags are very cool — they would indeed make very nice gifts. And I LOVE the “word” fabric for the body of the butterflies — I hadn’t seen that before — very, very cute!

    I really like your butterfly paper pieced quilt! ( Scrap quilts are my favorites. ) And the Swedish Dala horse fabric is lovely. Not too far from us is a small town that was settled by Swedes, so we have picked up a couple of the carved wood Dala horses.

    Every time I look at your blog, I want to sew.* You are truly inspiring!

      Hi Sandee – thanks for your comment. This foldable bag pattern came from the book “I Love Patchwork”. I am not able to share the pattern as it would be a breach of copyright. If you are interested, you may be able to find the book at your local library, or it is available to purchase through book stores. I linked to the book in my post.

Swipe for a little trip down memory lane.Back in 2016, my priorities were firmly centred around family. I was working full‑time, sewing in the guest room, sharing tutorials on my blog, and slowly dipping my toes into selling a handful of patterns on Etsy. It was a busy, full season — and creativity was something I fitted in around everything else.  Fast forward to 2026… I’m now retired and living the creative life I once dreamed of. My kids have grown up and are living in their own homes nearby. My husband and I are free to travel, explore, and enjoy this stage of life. And I get to spend my days designing, sewing, and connecting with this beautiful community.Life looks different now — in the best possible way.Were you following me back then, or what has changed for you over the past 10 years?
