Scrappy ,monochromatic patchwork is one of my favourite sewing techniques! I love combining small pieces of my favourite fabrics to create a new fabric to form part of a special project. In this latest pattern, I have combined a patchwork panel with a coordinating fabric, to create a Cosy Cat Placemat. These cute placemats are perfect for meal times. You could also use them as a pet placemat/ cat meal mat so your favourite feline can eat in style!
In this trio of cosy cat placemats, I used the Add it Up fabric range by Ruby Star Society for the top of the cats. By using the same print in different colours, it gives the placemats a cohesive look and creates a set. Yellow, blue and green – which colour to make next?
The placemats measure 12 inches in width and are 9 1/2 inches long (excluding the ears). I quilted the placemats in a cross hatch design over the patchwork section, and used diagonal lines for the top half of the placemat. These placemats can be easily made in an afternoon. If you have mini charms squares (2 1/2 inches square), that will speed up the cutting process.
When selecting fabric for the patchwork, use a variety of small scale prints. I like to add a few low volume fabrics for interest. Include polka dots, ginghams, stripes, florals and geometric prints.
