Patchwork Coasters

August 8, 2012 By Spoonful of Sugar - 8 Comments

As Father’s Day is only a little over 3 weeks away for Aussie Dad’s, we will be sharing a series of Tutorials/Gift Ideas over the coming weeks to give you some inspiration! If it isn’t Father’s Day in your part of the world, the ideas can be used to get a head start on your Christmas crafting.
A set of coasters is the perfect gift for the coffee lover Dad! Look for prints that have typography or another masculine print. Combined with natural linen and some quilting, coasters make an attractive and useful gift. Combine the coasters with some fair trade coffee beans and coffee mug for extra fun. You could even make your own Flavoured Coffee Beans.

Materials (for each coaster):

4 pieces of co-ordinating quilting cotton each measuring 2 ½ inch x 1 ½ inch

Natural Linen 4 ½ inch x 2 ½ inch

Quilting Cotton measuring 4 ½ x 4 ½ inch (backing)

Batting 4 ½ x 4 ½ inch

Co-ordinating thread

Finished Size:

4 inch x 4 inch

Project uses a seam allowance of ¼ inch.

Method:

Stitch the four pieces of quilting cotton together so that you have a piece of patchwork measuring 2 ½ inch x 4 ½ inch (Refer to photo). Press seams in one direction.

Layer the piece of linen on the patchwork strip so that the right sides are facing. Sew along the 4 ½ inch side. Press.

To assemble the coasters, layer the piece of batting, then the coaster top (rights side up), and the backing fabric (right side down). Line up the edges and pin the layers together.

Stitch the layers together around the perimeter, leaving  2 ½ inches along one side for turning.  Clip corners and turn the coaster out through the opening. Use a chopstick or point turner to poke out the corners. Fold in the seam allowance at the opening. Press.

Stitch around the perimeter of the coaster using a scant seam allowance. Quilt the coaster as desired.

Tip: If giving a set of coasters, layer them together, and tie with a torn strip of coordinating fabric, and attach a gift tag.
