Sewing for holidays is my favourite type of sewing. It really makes family celebrations more special when there is a handmade element. My latest design is the Chick Coaster Mug Rug. These are cute, cheerful and bright – perfect for Easter, spring time or any time of year! I love decorating my home for Easter with thoughtful touches in our living areas.
I combined my favourite yellow scraps to create a sweet Chick. Featuring a wool felt comb, appliqued beak and eyes – they add a sweet appeal to your morning coffee. Look for yellow fabrics that have a small scale print and include stripes, ginghams and polka dots.
This is a fun project and you can easily make a Chick Coaster in under an hour. You will have a flock of chickens in next to no time at all. You can use the Chick Mug Rugs at breakfast or snack time. They are colourful and fun. Kids will love them.
Did you know that you can sew and sell my designs? I support small sewing businesses to sell items made from my patterns in small hand made quantities in online stores and craft markets. Please credit me with the design e.g. this item is handmade using a pattern from A Spoonful of Sugar Designs.
You can find the 9 page PDF pattern for Chick Mug Rug in my Pattern Store and Etsy Shop. It includes full sized template and loads of helpful instructions and photos. This project is beginner friendly. Don’t forget to use hashtags #chickcoaster and #aspoonfulofsugardesigns when promoting on social media. I love to see what you make using my patterns.

These are the most adorable things ever, I think!! I ordered right away so I can get sewing now, although I don’t even know when Easter is this year. Question: You used wool felt for the chick’s comb, and I’m a bit concerned about washing it. Does it wash well? The coasters I make are going to home with small children, so I’m certain washing will be in their future. Perhaps a lot of it!
A Spoonful of Sugar says
Lori Both wool and acrylic felt are suitable for hand washing but they do have a tendency to shrink. If you expect your coasters to be washed repeatedly, rather than just spot cleaning, I would suggest you make the comb out of fabric. You would need to include seam allowances on the comb and sew two sides together. So glad to hear you love the pattern. Happy sewing!
