{Book Reviews} Party! and The Cake Parlour Sweet Tables

October 2, 2012 By Spoonful of Sugar - 10 Comments

If you are planning a child’s birthday party or special occasion, you will find plenty of inspiration in these new titles. Party themes, themed cakes and treats, and more.

Party! The Ultimate Kid’s Birthday Party Book is a wonderful guide to kids’ birthday parties! The beautifully photographed book includes ten party themes so you are bound to find a theme to suit the birthday child. Themes include: Fairy Princess, Outer Space, Dinosaurs, Cars & Trucks, Zoo, Craft, Cooking, Popstars, Sports Day, and Under the Sea. Each party theme includes step-by-step instructions for making fabulous decorations, food, birthday cake, costumes, invitations, and games that all fit the theme.

I remember when my teens were in primary school and there was always much discussion and planning of their birthday parties. This book would be such a great resource for parents and is bound to be one of those books that kids love to study. It has such terrific and creative ideas for decorations, food, and games, that can easily be made yourself with some help from the kids. So much nicer than store bought decorations that cost the earth.

Thoroughly recommend this book to anyone planning a kids party and after some fresh ideas.

The Cake Parlour Sweet Tables also has a helpful section on recipes and decorating techniques to help you achieve great results. If you enjoy baking and cake decorating, you will find plenty of inspiration to create a lovely cake/dessert table for your next event or special occasion.

Sarah and I have been studying the book and have some great ideas for our Christmas dessert buffet.

What a great variety of themes! I think it’s so great … and could even be an inspiration for teen and adult parties although of course they’d be adapted by the hostess.

Swipe for a little trip down memory lane.Back in 2016, my priorities were firmly centred around family. I was working full‑time, sewing in the guest room, sharing tutorials on my blog, and slowly dipping my toes into selling a handful of patterns on Etsy. It was a busy, full season — and creativity was something I fitted in around everything else.  Fast forward to 2026… I’m now retired and living the creative life I once dreamed of. My kids have grown up and are living in their own homes nearby. My husband and I are free to travel, explore, and enjoy this stage of life. And I get to spend my days designing, sewing, and connecting with this beautiful community.Life looks different now — in the best possible way. Were you following me back then, or what has changed for you over the past 10 years?
