Book Review: Stitched Whimsy by Heidi Boyd

April 6, 2012 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 3 Comments

Stitched Whimsy by Heidi Boyd is sweet book of 20 whimsical projects made from felt and fabric. I have seen Heidi’s work in Stitch Magazine and love her fun style, so was pleased to see that she had released a new book. Stitched Whimsy has so many wonderful colourful projects – suitable to make as gifts for children or anyone who loves cute items. Projects include:  mushrooms, gnomes, woodland animals, mermaids, owls and more.

All of the projects are beautifully styled and photographed – it is a really inspiring book to look through. The book starts with a helpful discussion of the materials used; tools; basic embroidery stitches; and other tips to get you started.

The book is divided into 4 chapters:
1. Needle Felt Fun – Needle felting techniques can be put to use with the projects in this chapter, including a sweet Matroyska Doll.
2. Whimsy for the Home – Using felt, fabric, and basic embroidery stitches you can create projecst for the home including a Mushroom Canvas.
3. Lovable Plushies – These lovable plushies are made using bright felt and fabrics, and would make great gifts for children.
4. Felt and Fabric – Pair felt and fabric together to make Mushroom Pincushion, Tweet Needle case and more.

All the pattern templates are included in the book, but they do need to be enlarged. Project instructions are clear, and the author has also drawn sketched illustrations of each step to guide you through the project.

The book is a delight and most of the projects are suitable for confident beginners/intermediate crafters. The projects are perfect for using up small pieces of your favourite fabrics and felt, and include embellishments such as embroidery, beads, buttons, and sequins.
