Wrapped in Love: Guide to Gifting Quilts

August 19, 2024 By A Spoonful of Sugar - Leave a Comment

Quilts are more than just bed coverings; they’re expressions of care that wrap the recipient in the warmth of the giver’s affection. By including a few extras with your gift, you will ensure your quilt is treasured for years to come. In this article, I will cover the best ways to gift, wrap, wash and store a quilt.

Patchwork Portraits – Set of 3 Gift Cards

Handmade Quilt Card

A handmade card accompanying the quilt can provide a heartfelt message and details about the quilt’s creation—mention the design name, your color inspiration, and the story behind its making. You might also include the date and place where the quilt was made, adding a historical context to your gift. For an extra thoughtful touch, attach a small fabric swatch or a photo of you working on the quilt, giving the recipient a glimpse into the creative process. These small details show the care and thought you’ve put into the gift, making it all the more special.

Classic Laundry Bag makes an Ideal Quilt Bag

How to Wrap a Quilt for Gifting

To present the quilt, consider sewing a quilt bag, which not only serves as elegant wrapping but can also be used for storage. I use the Classic Laundry Bag for a quilt bag – it is perfect to hold a queen sized quilt and can be made bigger or smaller in needed. Make it from left over quilt fabric so it matches the quilt perfectly.

How to Care for a Quilt

Washing a quilt is a delicate process; it should be done with gentle, dye-free detergents, and it’s often recommended to include a color catcher during the first wash to prevent color bleeding. You could include washing instructions and a colour catcher with the quilt to ensure that it is properly cared for by the recipient.

Caring for a handmade quilt properly ensures its longevity and preserves the memories it holds. When it’s time to wash your quilt, start by testing for colorfastness to protect the vibrant hues. Use a clean tub or sink and fill it with room temperature water, avoiding hot water to prevent shrinking and bleeding of colors. A mild, liquid detergent formulated for delicate fabrics is your best bet. Gently agitate the quilt in the water without scrubbing or twisting, which can damage the fibers. After washing, rinse the quilt with several changes of clean water until all soap residue is gone. For a final rinse, adding half a cup of distilled white vinegar can help stabilize the colors and remove any lingering soap. Air drying is the safest method; lay the quilt flat on a clean, dry surface away from direct sunlight to avoid fading. Remember, quilts don’t need frequent washing—once a year is often enough unless it’s subjected to heavy use. These simple steps will help keep your quilt looking beautiful for years to come.

How to Store a Quilt

Storing your quilt properly when it’s not in use is crucial to preserving its beauty and longevity. It’s best to keep quilts in a cool, dry place with stable temperature and humidity levels, ideally around 65-68°F (18-20°C) and 40-50% relative humidity. Avoid areas like basements or attics where temperature and humidity can fluctuate. For the material, opt for acid-free boxes or cotton bags to allow the fabric to breathe, and avoid plastic containers that can trap moisture. If you’re using a wooden chest, ensure it’s lined with acid-free paper to protect against acids in the wood. When folding the quilt, try to avoid sharp folds that can cause permanent creases; rolling it around a pool noodle can prevent this. Additionally, refold or rotate the quilt periodically to avoid stress on the fabric at the fold lines. By following these guidelines, your quilt will remain a cherished item for years to come.

Remember, the key to a memorable quilt gift lies in the details that show thoughtfulness and care. Whether it’s through the wrapping, the accompanying card, or the care instructions you provide, each element contributes to the quilt’s legacy as a cherished keepsake.
