Crochet Rugs

October 12, 2014 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 22 Comments

Crochet 1If you follow us on Instagram, you will have noticed that Sarah and I have been busy crocheting over the past couple of months. We bought a stack of cotton/acrylic blend yarn from Spotlight and have been sharing our stash as we work on our own crochet rugs.

Crochet 5

I am making a rug consisting of motifs. Weaving in all the loose ends is keeping me busy. I still have a pile of motifs to crochet and it is relaxing to work on it at night in front of the television.

Crochet Motifs 1

I found the Granny Square Motif on Haakkamer 7. Although the pattern is in Dutch, it is easy to translate and has really good photos showing each round.

Crochet 3

Sarah is working on a giant granny square rug which is growing fast. This is only her second crochet project – she learnt to crochet a few months ago and now there is no stopping her!

Crochet 2

Hopefully we will be back with the completed rugs before too long!

These pictures are delightful, so bright and cheerful, what a beautiful way to show off those candy coloured balls of wool. I love the blocks and the colour ways. I am in the middle of a granny square blanket myself, I think I may try adding these blocks in.

Thanks (I tried to post a comment earlier but something went wrong, so if there are two from me, I apologise!)

    Hi,

These squares are very beautiful. I am a beginner at crochet. Would you be willing to translate the pattern?

    Warm regards,

    Natalie

The pattern is from another blog – the link is in the blog post. Although it is in Dutch, there is a link on her site which translates the stitches from Dutch to English.

I tried using the translation for the stitches, and then used Google Translate . I am not a veteran crocheter so I need a little help. Could you give the basics of the pattern in a round by round, please? I really love the look of these squares and the colors you used are perfect!

Hi Leslie – It is not my pattern so I am unable to translate it for you as that would be a breach of copyright. You can see the translation of the stitches here:
          http://haakkamer7.blogspot.nl/p/translation-stitches.html
          Hope that helps,

          Lisa

Thanks for your help. Tried two different translation sites and the translation was pretty comical. Guess I will just use a different pattern.

What size hook are you using for the squares?

Thank you! I translated most of it yesterday. The only part I can’t find is the type of yarn. What are you using for your squares?

        Thank you again!

Hi Natalie – I am using a cotton acrylic blend (called Moda Vera Beetle – which is an Australian brand from Spotlight stores) that is equivalent to an 8 ply yarn.

I just love the bright colors that were chosen for your projects. The yarn that was chosen, is it machine washable?

Hi Patrice – we usually hand wash our knitted and crosheted projects. I am not sure how it would go int he washing machine but should be OK on a gentle cycle and then dry flat in the shade.

Is what you call a rug what we call a blanket in Mississippi, USA? Just found your blog and tutorials. Great job!

Hi Susan I didn’t keep a tally of the yarn unfortunately, My daughter was making a rug using the same colours and we shared the yarn. I kept buying more over a year period.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly was concerned about matching the dye lot. I suppose it is not as noticeable as in knitting. Hopefully now I can do the pattern as I am really only a beginner at following a crochet pattern. Have downloaded the translation so will give it a go.

Hello I have finally been able to source all the yarn for the granny square rug and am going to start. I have a query and was wondering if you can help. The pattern says a treble stitch (yarn wrapped around twice) but when I look at the tutorial at Haakamer 7 for the pattern the wool is wrapped around once. Could you clarify which stitch you used. Thanks Sue

I used the instructions from Haakamer 7 and used the handy stitch translation guide found here: http://haakkamer7.blogspot.com.au/p/translation-stitches.html Some crochet stitches are different depending on whether you are using USA or UK terms. Happy crochet!
