Easy Wash Cloth to Sew

I am still working my way through the pack of plain face washers/wash cloths that I bought recently, and transforming them into little gifts. This weeks’ quick craft, is an easy wash cloth that has been edged in a sweet polka dot bias tape and features an appliquéd motif of a VW love Bug. This project was completed in under 30 minutes and looks really fun and cheerful. I am planning on partnering it with some body products to put in a gift basket. They would also be great to make for a craft stall.

This is a fun sewing project that would be great for a beginner sewer or older child. Good opportunity to work on attaching bias binding.

If you would like to make one, you will need:

• plain white wash cloth/ face washer
• 1.5 yards (1.5 metres) ready-made bias tape. ( I used Lace Edged Cotton Bias Binding from Sew Creative Supplies) or make your own.
• Novelty fabric for appliqué patch. (I used some VW fabric from my stash – it did not have a printed selvedge and it is a print I have had for many years.)

To make the wash cloth, firstly cut off the bound edges on all four sides of the wash cloth. Use a large cotton reel or small drinking glass as a template and mark rounded corners. Trim the corners.

Pin the binding around the outside edge of the wash cloth and stitch in place.

On your novelty print fabric, cut around the motif leaving a 1/2 inch clearance around the design. Press under 1/4 inch on each of the four sides. Position the motif on the wash cloth and pin in place. Stitch around the outside of the motif. Press the wash cloth.
