Gingerbread House

December 21, 2011 By Spoonful of Sugar - 20 Comments

One of our Christmas traditions is to make and decorate a Gingerbread house each year. When we lived in Texas, Sarah and I went along to the elementary school each Christmas and assisted my son’s class in making gingerbread houses out of Graham Crackers. So much fun and something the kids really loved to do. The houses don’t have to be perfect – as long as they are covered in lots of sweet treats.

This year as time is in short supply, we purchased a kit from Ikea. The gingerbread smells delicious. Sarah assembled and decorated the house this morning before she went to work. It has now been wrapped in cellophane and will form part of our table setting.

Next year we hope to have more time to make our house from scratch. I have been inspired by all the wonderful creations I have been seeing over on Pinterest. There are small gingerbread houses for propping on mugs, classic gingerbread houses with beautiful piped details, gingerbread boxes for something different, and even a house made of sugar cubes.

Here are some of our favourites:

Not Martha
Tania McCartney
Martha Stewart
King Arthur Flour
Ladies Home Journal

Love your gingerbread house! I have always wanted to make one of these, but never end up doing that. What do you do with the house after the holidays? Are they edible? Someday, I will make one!

Cute, cute, cute. Three of my grandsons and I made one, but we used a kit. When their attention spans are a bit longer we might try one from scratch. Inspiring photos!

I have never made one but they look so cute! I was only in K-Mart yesterday when I heard a young mum asking the man at the door whether they had gingerbread kits! I wish I had known that Ikea (upstairs!) had them! Now I know! I love the little “Not Martha” mug one!! So sweet!

We started making gingerbread houses with the neighbors in Japan. Lots of candy, many children, treats and spiced hot tea. Our family continued to do it for many years, even in school. I love the tradition. Thanks for the inspiration.

No gingerbread house here this year, after the mess my daughter and her friend made last year they are banned!!! One day we will try again! Maybe a kit is the way to go.

Your gingerbread house looks great! We never made them as kids (at least not that I remember) but I’ve made them with my nephew the past 3 years (he’s 5). This year my sister bought one of those kits that has 5 little houses in it, so we made 5 of them. It was a good time :)Thanks for sharing all the fancy ones!

Would you mind if I used the photo of your ikea gingerbread house on a flyer I’m making to advertise a free gingerbread house decorating event? I would be using it in a fb post and some papers to hand out to families at my church. Thanks!
