This ‘n’ That

November 29, 2010 By Spoonful of Sugar - 28 Comments

Sarah made up a batch of Chocolate Caramel Cookie Bars (Recipe from Martha Stewart) on the weekend and they were delicious!! The salted chocolate caramel layer was amazing. I think we will be making more of these over the festive season.
Sarah and I are attending a Gingerbread House Workshop at a local cake decorating store on the weekend. We have been busy buying lots of lollies – can’t wait to learn all the techniques. This may become a Christmas tradition!
The latest Handmade Magazine is dedicated to Quick Christmas Crafts and includes my Starry Night Napkins. These were fun to put together and I love the aqua and silver colours ( I might have to have a change from the red and white next year!)

I must make those chocolate bars! Better wait till Laura is here, so I don’t have to eat that many ;o)
    Cute Starry Night Napkins!
My favorite color for Christmas? I must say, I like the traditional colors red, green and white, but then nice and bright! And it depends on the fabric line. I am now working with ‘non traditional’ colors and I enjoy it very much!

    Those are so pretty!

My colors are pretty traditional warm red and green, but I have enjoyed brightening them up recently to more of a 60s happy green and red. It has been fun using girlie Christmas colors for my daughter’s white tree – turquoise, hot green, bright purple and red, and hot pink.

Those napkins are beautiful! I’m not sure what my favorite colors for Christmas are — it’s always been red and tradtional Christmas green — but lately I’ve been loving red and lime green and some aqua thrown in.

I hope you love the gingerbread houses. It’s a tradition that my family looks forward to every year. Just last night my sister was whispering some big plan for a gingerbread house to my youngest niece — accompanied by maniacal laughter. Everyone keeps their plan top secret, in case ideas should be stolen LOL!

Oh my those cookies look divine. And of course I had to go look at the recipe….I have never been able to find fleur de sel in NZ though. Several recipes I use call for it, and I always just use normal salt…I wonder what the difference would be.

The napkins are lovely. I seem to always trend towards the traditional colours for Christmas so reds, golds and greens for me. But having said that some of the more modern Christmas fabrics are gorgeous with their not so traditional colours

The stars are beautiful and I love those colours. For Christmas my favourite colours are still very traditional red, green, gold and a touch of country blue. I am a blue lover so there has to be some blue.

We have a different colour theme every Christmas. Last year was my favourite so far with red and turquoise. This year we are doing “rainbow” which requires the tree to be dressed from yellow/gold at the top, downwards through all the rainbow’s colours to purple at the bottom. Miss Six and I are even trying our hand at making some rainbow ornaments from sculpey…we are kind of making it up as we go along so I hope they turn out! Wish us luck!

Blue is my favorite color and my favorite Christmas color is red and white. I like to think outside the box this year and use a few blue decorations. I think it will be very pretty with my snowmen. Love your blue stars.

Swipe for a little trip down memory lane.Back in 2016, my priorities were firmly centred around family. I was working full‑time, sewing in the guest room, sharing tutorials on my blog, and slowly dipping my toes into selling a handful of patterns on Etsy. It was a busy, full season — and creativity was something I fitted in around everything else.  Fast forward to 2026… I’m now retired and living the creative life I once dreamed of. My kids have grown up and are living in their own homes nearby. My husband and I are free to travel, explore, and enjoy this stage of life. And I get to spend my days designing, sewing, and connecting with this beautiful community.Life looks different now — in the best possible way. Were you following me back then, or what has changed for you over the past 10 years? The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad & Placemat Set show The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad & Placemat Set showcases one of my favourite FPP designs — a stunning kaleidoscope‑style block that always turns out beautifully. Kaleidoscope blocks are some of my most popular FPP patterns, and this set is such a fun way to use them.  This set includes six sizes, making it incredibly versatile: use them as hot pads, trivets, placemats, or simply as a way to add a pop of colour to your kitchen. For these samples, I went with a monochromatic scrap‑busting approach, pairing fabrics from the same colour family with a low‑volume background. The black‑and‑white striped binding adds such a crisp, modern finish. It’s a wonderful project for building your FPP confidence — and a fantastic way to use up those treasured scraps. The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad set is our Pattern of the Week. It is currently 25% off this week in our Pattern Store and Etsy Shop.If you’d like to sew your own set, comment TWIRL and I’ll send the pattern link straight to you.Happy sewing!
