One of my favourite sewing magazines is Cotton Time, a Japanese magazine that is packed with cute zakka projects to sew. I have picked up a few issues over the years on trips to Japan, and managed to find a copy at Kinokuniya in New York earlier in the year. The issue came with a calendar which included a photo of a sweet Christmas Mini Wreath made from Liberty yoyo’s in reds/greens. I can’t read Japanese so was inspired to make my own version of the Liberty Mini Wreath. These little mini wreaths would be a sweet gift for Mother’s Day and are so easy to make!
I made 10 small yoyo’s using a Clover Yoyo Maker (size small – 30 mm) from a variety of Liberty prints in pinks, blues, and lilac. I love the yoyo maker – it gives a nice consistent result when making lots of yoyo’s and is really easy to use. Liberty Tana Lawn is perfect for making small yoyos as the fabric is really soft and gathers us beautifully.
To create a wreath with your yoyos, you could use a metal ring or a small embroidery hoop. I wanted to finish it straight away so used what I had on hand. I drew a circle (approx 3.5 inches in diameter) onto card and cut it out. I then cut out the centre of the circle leaving a 3/8 inch border around the circle. As the yoyo’s are very light, the card was able to support them. I tacked them onto the card with a few stitches, and attached a felt bow and a ribbon hanging loop at the top. If you don’t want to stitch the yoyos on to the card, you could use hot glue.
In the photo below you can just make out the cardboard ring under the yoyo’s, but it is not visible when it is hanging up. I made the felt bow using gorgeous 100% Merino Wool Felt.
This is a fun project to use your small Liberty scraps, or any other small scale printed cotton fabric.
Mini Yoyo Wreaths would look sweet hanging on a door or door handle. I plan to make some more in Christmas fabrics to decorate my home for the holidays.
