Lavender Crafts – Part 1

June 8, 2008 By Spoonful of Sugar - 42 Comments

It has been just over a week since I started drying my lavender and I am already getting very impatient!! Fortunately I have recently acquired some ready dried lavender (thanks MUM!!) so was able to try out a few quick scented crafts. I am hoping my lavender will be well and truly dried by mid July so that Sarah and her friends can make a batch of lavender gifts during their 2 week inter-semester break.
I have a few quick projects to share with you. All of these projects can be made up with lavender or any other dried botanical such as dried roses, chamomile, lemon verbena, peppermint, or dried citrus peel. They smell divine and they are excellent deterents for moths and other pests!
1. Envelope Sachets
This couldn’t be easier! Just draw a design as a template, layer over an envelope, and then punch out using a thick pin. Work on a cork board or cutting mat to avoid damaging your work surface. Fill the envelope with about a tablespoon of lavender and then seal with a glue stick. (Source: Martha Stewart Holiday – Handmade Gifts 2006.)

2. Muslin or Organza Sachets

Cut out a circle ut of muslin or organza that is 7.5 inches in diameter,. Fill with a tablespoon of lavender and then secure with a rubber band. Tie a ribbon around the band and secure in a bow.

3. Fabric Sachets

Sew together a rectangle of cotton fabric with a rectangle of muslin and fill with a tablespoon of lavender. Make several and layer them in a pile, and secure with a ribbon bow. These can be tucked into underwear drawers or left onvdisplay in a little china or silver dish.

4. Tub Teas

Get an existing tea bag and carefully open it at the top and remove the existing tea. Fill with a teaspoon of lavender and staple to close, using the existing tab and string. Cover the tab with some lavender card and cover the staple with a die cut shape using a small punch. This will turn plan old bath water into an aromatic treat!

I have plenty of other ideas of lavender so stay tuned!

Lisa – I’m so excited! I love these ideas and of course once I find some lavendar…this would be great for me too. Is that your lavender in the picture or just a photo?

Lavender…Ahhhh, I love lavender. I am quite taken with your fabric sachets and the tub tea. I might have to give them a try this fall after my lavender finally gives me some blooms! Right now it is only about six inches high, but it is growing more everyday.

Yay! All of these projects are just brilliant.

I had a childhood flashback when reading the one with the organza squares tied up with a rubber band … I think I made one of these in school for a Mother’s Day gift once.

And the envelope punching is so simple and effective for a drawer liner too. Great work – love it.

Swipe for a little trip down memory lane.Back in 2016, my priorities were firmly centred around family. I was working full‑time, sewing in the guest room, sharing tutorials on my blog, and slowly dipping my toes into selling a handful of patterns on Etsy. It was a busy, full season — and creativity was something I fitted in around everything else.  Fast forward to 2026… I’m now retired and living the creative life I once dreamed of. My kids have grown up and are living in their own homes nearby. My husband and I are free to travel, explore, and enjoy this stage of life. And I get to spend my days designing, sewing, and connecting with this beautiful community.Life looks different now — in the best possible way. Were you following me back then, or what has changed for you over the past 10 years? It’s the same tool I use for snaps — and it makes installing eyelets beautifully quick and consistent. For this Ribbon Pouch, I used the Liberty Gifts from the Garden collection (printed on Lasenby cotton and released in January 2026). The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad & Placemat Set show The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad & Placemat Set showcases one of my favourite FPP designs — a stunning kaleidoscope‑style block that always turns out beautifully. Kaleidoscope blocks are some of my most popular FPP patterns, and this set is such a fun way to use them.  This set includes six sizes, making it incredibly versatile: use them as hot pads, trivets, placemats, or simply as a way to add a pop of colour to your kitchen. For these samples, I went with a monochromatic scrap‑busting approach, pairing fabrics from the same colour family with a low‑volume background. The black‑and‑white striped binding adds such a crisp, modern finish. It’s a wonderful project for building your FPP confidence — and a fantastic way to use up those treasured scraps. The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad set is our Pattern of the Week. It is currently 25% off this week in our Pattern Store and Etsy Shop.If you’d like to sew your own set, comment TWIRL and I’ll send the pattern link straight to you.Happy sewing!
