Heavenly Hexies

June 17, 2010 By Spoonful of Sugar - 27 Comments

Six is my lucky number – six members of my immediate family are born on the sixth day of a month (makes remembering birthdays so much easier). Perhaps that is why I am attracted to hexagons. I bought a pack of hexagon shapes at a recent craft fair (1 1/4 inch in size)  and they are making the process so much faster and more accurate.

I am using up some scraps of Modern Meadow in shades of berry, pink, and grass. Just have to decide on a layout and then I can get piecing. It is the perfect project to do in front of the TV.

I picked up Quilt It with Wool at the library this week. Of course it was the sweet hexies on the cover project that drew me in. It is lovely book with some terrific projects using woollen fabric, felts, and tweeds in a range of fun projects. Just the thing for some winter crafting.

Life has been a bit hectic around here lately! My design work has been picking up which has kept me on my toes. I also start another part time job next week (in addition to the one I already have) which is going to cut into some of my creative and blogging time. I have been dreadful at answering emails and leaving comments lately. Hopefully things will settle down soon. If I have answered your email, please be assured we read and appreciate all the wonderful comments we get:)

On the plus side, the new job will mean I can fund a new camera and I am going to invest in an SLR. If anyone has any tips, features to look for, or specific models to recommend, I would be most appreciative.

Yay for new cameras! Ok, you need to get a Nikon. If you’re going to invest, may as well get the best. I have a D40X, and while there used to be issues with some of the add-on lenses not auto-focusing on this “cheaper” model, they now make lenses that will. And the lenses for this body are cheaper than the lenses for the super expensive Nikon bodies (like the D3000) Just wanted to make you aware as you’ll probably come across this issue in your research.

Also, especially for still-life photography (like hexagons!), you will want a super fast lens, like an F1.4 or 1.8. This way you will be able to shoot without a flash even in low light (ie: indoors) and you’ll get that nice background blur, so the picture isn’t visually overwhelming and the focus will really be on whatever you’re showcasing.

Good luck! Make sure to do lots of research as there are always plenty of deals out there, like an extra lens included, etc.

Your hexagons are so pretty! I have been wanting to try these, especially with the hexagon shapes to help. Know what you’re going to make with them? That wool book looks fabulous, especially those wool hexagons on the cover! Hang in there with all those jobs!

    Love those Hexies…. SO colourful!
We have been looking for a SLR too…. We are leaning towards the Canon 550D. It comes with a twin lens kit, or you can swap it for the single one 18 x 200 for a little extra which will come in handy so you dont have to switch all the time! And, it is a better lens! It also has a full HDD movie feature too! So 2 camera’s in one!
Goodluck with your decision… I look forward to seeing what you buy!

Isn’t it a shame that things like work have to cut into our craft time. It should be banned really LOL.

Your hexagons look so pretty all stacked up! You’ll have so much fun with an SLR — I just love mine. I’m a Nikon (or as you girls down under say, Nick-on — I learned that from Kellie and Jan LOL) girl. And you think you have no time now — just wait until you’re taking pictures of everything!!!

ohhhhh I love hexagons! I’m really enjoying them and I buy them from a lady in WA actually.

Oh I love my dslr but totally left it to my dad who is the camera man! he’s an olympus man so I have an olympus e-620 which has everything I need and more. My favourite are the art filters where I can do pinhole filter shots, grainy, black and white etc!

ohhh the fun you will have!
