I always have a drink on hand when I am “working” in my sewing studio – generally tea or iced water. I worry about staining/marking my delicates fabrics if I leave any moisture on my cutting mat or sewing desk. To solve this problem I designed a coaster. Introducing the Cotton Reel Coaster Mug Rug.
I love vintage wooden cotton reels and this was the inspiration for my design. The Cotton Reel Coaster has a natural linen top and bottom to represent the wooden ends of a cotton reel. I used 4 strips of fabric from the same colour family. I incorporated small scale florals, geometrics, polka dots, and low volume prints.
Some simple quilting was added. Cotton reel mug rugs are a fun, beginner friendly project. You can find the PDF Sewing Pattern in my Etsy Store and Pattern Shop. The pattern includes a 9 page ePattern with plenty of photos and steps to guide you through the construction process.
Cotton Reel Coasters would make a lovely gift for a friend who sews and would be perfect to include in a swap package. Make a batch for yourself to brighten up your sewing room and you will always have one on hand when you need one. They are easily made in under an hour – the hardest part is choosing the fabrics to use!
I made a pastel set in pretty pinks, mauves, blues and greens. You can go bold or bright – whatever suits your style.
Head to our Etsy Store or Pattern Shop to get your copy of the pattern. Pretty and practical – my favourite type of project.
