With Christmas now less than a month away, we are starting to plan our decorating. We always decorate our tree on the first weekend in December with the Christmas carols playing. We love to add new decorations to our tree each year. Can’t wait – love this time of year!
Christmas House Ornaments are our home made tree decorations this year. Made from white felt with fabric appliqué and embroidery detail, they suit our Scandinavian theme. They are so quick and easy to make. We made up a batch in an afternoon.
If you would like to make your own, you will need:
Materials:
- white felt (we used acrylic as it was what we had on hand)
- scraps of red/white fabric
- double sided appliqué web such as steam a seam
- red/white bakers twine
- red button
- red embroidery thread
Supplies:
- sewing machine
- embroidery needle
- scissors – straight and zigzag
- Template
Method:
1. From the white felt, cut out one square that measures 4 x 4 inches, and one house shape using the template. Cut a length of bakers twine that measures 9 inches in length.
2. Trace the roof and door shapes onto the paper back of the appliqué fusible webbing. Cut out leaving a 1/2 inch clearance around the shapes, and iron on to the back of the fabric following manufacturers instructions. Cut out the shapes. Peel off paper backing. Position the roof and door in place on the felt and press to adhere (refer to photo below for placement).
3. Layer the house shape onto the square of felt as shown. Make a loop from the twine and stitch in place on the backing felt. Using white thread, stitch along the sides and bottom of the house.
4. Using red thread, stitch around the roof and door. We stitched around them three times.
5. Using pinking shears (zigzag blade) trim the roof through both layers, being careful not to clip the twine. Trim the sides of the house with regular scissors.
6. Stitch a button to the top of the house as shown. Using two strands of embroidery thread, stitch a star above the door and add a French knot to 4 points of the star. (Refer to photo below).
We love our little Christmas houses and can’t wait to add them to our tree this year!
