Sacagawea and Baking

During the week I found out that over the next term my extension group will be doing a “Night of the Notables”. We have to research a notable person, write a biography on them, and set up a learning display. On the night, we have to dress up as our person and serve food from that era. I have chosen Sacagawea who helped Lewis and Clark on their expedition. I was wondering if anyone has a US dollar coin featuring Sacagawea that I could use on my display. I would be willing to send you something from Australia in return for one of these coins. 

Today we celebrate Fathers Day in Australia. This afternoon we are having all our relatives over so I have been doing some baking. I have made some Custard Shortbreads and some Chocolate Brownies. If you would like the recipe for the brownies it can be found here. This time I substituted white choc chips for the Jesey caramels.

Here is the recipe for the Custard Shortbreads:

185 g butter 
⅓ cup icing sugar 
1½ cups plain flour 
⅓ cup custard powder

Cream butter and icing sugar, add sifted flour and custard powder, and a dash of vanilla. Mix well. Form into balls and place onto greased oven trays and press with a fork to form biscuits. Bake in a moderate oven for about 15 minutes.

    Yum those brownies look good! Funny, father’s day in Canada is in June. It’s all kind of opposite. I think your mothers day is quite different from ours’ too – we celebrate in May.

    It’s Father’s day here in NZ too. I didn’t do any baking as it wouldn’t be a very nice present to poision the father would it. Your baking looks very delicious.

    When do you need the coin? I’m in the US so I’m sure we have one somewhere around the house. If not I think it will be easy to get.
    We celebrated father’s Day in June but the brownies look yummy!

    Oh Yum Sarah — what a great cook you must be! I see you have several offers for the coin — if they fall through, let me know and I’ll do some looking for you. This custard powder is a mystery to me — I think I looked into it months ago when someone else posted a recipe. It’s not available locally but we can get it through mail order. I should have had my son bring me some when he was in AU!

    ok – call me useless. I’ve just tried to bake your custard shortbreads. Firstly I mis-read the recipe and used 1/2 cup of icing sugar and custard powder – doh. Secondly please can you tell me approx how may oz’s or grams is half a cup ? Then I’ll have another go 🙂

    One thing I’d say to remember while researching your report is to make sure you have sources that are written by a Native American for an authentic perspective (I’m sure you already know this, but the teacher in me is busting out).
