Stitching Success: Lessons for My Younger Self

July 15, 2024 By A Spoonful of Sugar - Leave a Comment

My first attempts at sewing involved making clothes from my dolls. My Mum and Nan were excellent seamstresses and they taught me the basics. Over the years I have made clothing for myself and my children; toys; homewares, quilts, bags and more. My style has changed over the years, but I have grown in skills and confidence from each project.

Reflecting on your sewing journey can be both inspiring and insightful. Here are 10 things you might tell your younger self as a sewist:

  1. Embrace Mistakes: Every error is a learning opportunity. Don’t be afraid to make them. Mistakes are part of the journey. Each one teaches you something new, whether it’s about a technique, a fabric, or even your own patience. Remember, even the most skilled sewists have made countless mistakes. It’s how you grow and improve.
  2. Invest in Quality Tools: Good tools make a huge difference in your sewing experience and the quality of your work. Think of your tools as an extension of your hands. High-quality scissors, needles, and sewing machines can make your work smoother and more enjoyable. They might be more expensive upfront, but they save you time and frustration in the long run.
  3. Take Your Time: Rushing leads to mistakes. Enjoy the process and take it one step at a time. Sewing is as much about the journey as it is about the finished product. Taking your time allows you to be more precise and thoughtful with your work. Plus, it makes the process more meditative and enjoyable.
  4. Learn the Basics Thoroughly: Mastering the fundamentals will make advanced techniques much easier. . Just like building a house, a strong foundation is crucial. Spend time perfecting your basic stitches, understanding fabric types, and learning how to properly use your sewing machine. These skills will make more complex projects less daunting.
  5. Stay Organized: Keep your workspace tidy and your supplies in order. It saves time and reduces stress. An organized space helps you find what you need quickly and keeps your mind clear. Consider using labeled bins, pegboards, and drawer organizers to keep everything in its place. A tidy space can also spark creativity.
  6. Experiment with Fabrics: Don’t be afraid to try different types of fabrics. Each one has its own unique qualities. Different fabrics behave differently under the needle. Experimenting with various textures and weights can teach you a lot about how to handle them. Plus, it keeps your projects interesting and diverse.
  7. Seek Inspiration: Follow other sewists, join communities, and keep an eye on trends. Inspiration can come from anywhere. Surround yourself with creativity. Join sewing groups, follow blogs, and attend workshops. Seeing what others create can spark new ideas and keep you motivated.
  8. Document Your Projects: Keep a journal or take photos of your projects. It’s rewarding to see your progress over time. Documenting your work helps you track your growth and remember techniques you’ve learned. It also provides a sense of accomplishment and a visual diary of your creative journey.
  9. Prioritize Comfort: Make sure your sewing space is comfortable. Ergonomics matter, especially if you spend long hours sewing. A comfortable chair, good lighting, and a well-organized workspace can make a huge difference. Pay attention to your posture and take breaks to stretch. Your body will thank you.
  10. Believe in Yourself: Confidence grows with experience. Trust your instincts and creativity. . Self-doubt can be a major hurdle. Remember that every expert was once a beginner. Trust your creative instincts and don’t be afraid to take risks. With each project, your confidence will grow.
