Stars are one of my most favourite blocks to include in quilts. My latest foundation paper pieced quilt block is Sunset Star, a variation of the Mills and Star Block. The Mills and Stars block is also known as Hummingbird and Vintage Kite. This is a great block for a scrappy quilt. I love the four little 3 inch blocks I’ve made and can’t wait to include them in a project.
I constructed the Sunset Star block from four separate pieces. You can make it as scrappy as you like. In this little 3 inch block, I used two fabrics for the stars and then a variety of low volume fabrics for the background.
I like using fabrics that are predominantly one colour with a textural element for added interest.
Sunset Stars is a foundation paper pieced quilt block that ensures your stars are quickly and accurately pieced. I’ve included five sizes in the pattern – 2 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch, 5 inch and 6 inch. Templates are provided in both A4 and Letter size to suit your home printer. I have also included a coloring sheet so you can experiment with the colour selection for your project.
These blocks are suitable for a wide range of projects – pillows, mini quilts, quilts, table runners, pot holders, placemats, and more! The sky is the limit. What will you make with your blocks?
