Favourite Uses for Fabric Tape (Plus: How to Make Your Own Fabric Tape!)
Fabric tape is one of those delightful craft supplies that instantly adds charm to any project. Made from cotton fabric with an adhesive backing, fabric tape works just like washi tape — simply cut, peel, and stick. It’s perfect for gift wrapping, card making, journaling, decorating jars, and adding sweet details to handmade projects.
If you’ve never used fabric tape before, you’re in for a treat. And the best part? You can easily make your own fabric tape at home using your favourite fabric scraps.
⭐ How to Make Your Own Fabric Tape
Making your own fabric tape is quick, fun, and a wonderful way to use small scraps.
You’ll Need
Cotton fabric scraps
Double‑sided adhesive sheets (e.g., JAC paper or any scrapbook adhesive sheet)
Rotary cutter or scissors
Ruler
Cutting mat
Instructions
Press your fabric so it’s smooth and wrinkle‑free.
Apply the adhesive sheet to the wrong side of the fabric, smoothing out any bubbles.
Trim the fabric into strips using a rotary cutter and ruler.
Popular widths: 1 cm, 1.5 cm, 2 cm
Store your strips on a backing sheet until you’re ready to use them.
When needed, peel off the paper backing and stick your fabric tape to your project.
Homemade fabric tape has a lovely texture and allows you to coordinate perfectly with your sewing projects, seasonal fabrics, or favourite collections.
Store Bought Fabric Tape
Fabric tape is made from cotton fabric with an adhesive backing and sold on a roll. Simply cut, peel and stick – strips of fabric tape can be used in so many craft projects. You can use fabric tape for gift wrapping, card making, home decorating, and other craft projects. You can use it in place of regular sticky tape or washi tape. It can be used to decorate glass, wood, or paper. It has a lovely texture and adds a sweet finishing touch to your next project. I love these sweet Tilda fabric tapes – they coordinate with the Tilda fabric collections – Memory Lane Fabrics and Cabbage Roses Fabrics.
Once you start using fabric tape you will discover so many applications for it! Here are some of my favourite uses for Fabric Tape.
1. Decorate Vases and Glass Jars
Add a couple of contrasting strips of fabric tape around a glass jar to create a sweet focal point. Perfect for flowers, pencils, or craft storage.
2. Seal Gift Bags and Packages
Fabric tape adds a handmade touch to small gifts, baked treats, and party favours. A strip across a cellophane bag instantly elevates your packaging.
3. Cupcake Flags
Fold a small piece of fabric tape around a toothpick and trim the end into a flag shape. These look adorable for birthdays, afternoon teas, and celebrations.
4. Decorated Pegs (Clothespins)
Add a strip of fabric tape to wooden pegs to create cute clips for displaying cards, hanging swatches, or organising your sewing room.
⭐ Tips for Using Fabric Tape
Fabric tape is best used as a decorative element, not for sewing through.
If you can’t find adhesive sheets, double‑sided tape works well for narrow strips.
Mix and match prints for a playful, scrappy look.
Store your homemade tape in a small tin or envelope to keep it dust‑free.
Disclaimer: Thanks to Two Green Zebras (Australian distributor of Tilda) for supplying the Tilda Fabric tape used in these projects.

Very cute ideas!
Thanks Mary Ann 🙂
How Beautiful…
Every projects look so cute !
Great ideas, I used mine to cover the back of a small hoop from Dandelyne made the back look cute as well as the front.
Fantastic idea – must try that one!
Neat ideas. Do you know if you can sew through the fabric tape? I went to your tutorial to make your own. But I’ve never heard of JAC paper.
Hi Kathleen – I wouldn’t sew with the fabric tape – it is more of a decorative element. JAC Paper is double sided adhesive paper. You could use double sided tape as a substitute or ask at your local scrap booking store.
Where can I purchase this beautiful fabric tape in the US?
Hi Rhonda – Check on Etsy for fabric tape – lots of sellers will ship to US if there aren’t any local to you. There are so many great designs available.
I’ve got lots of fabric tape but hardly ever use it! Have to try some of these sweet ideas. And to Kathleen I’ve tried sewing through it – on a machine it coats the needle with sticky and makes a horrible tangle of threads (definitely won’t try again!) Hand sewing is better but its difficult as again your needle will get a coating of sticky making it very hard to push through the fabric.
Thanks for the advice regarding sewing with tape Ann. I haven’t tried sewing it – generally prefer to use it as adhesive decoration.
