Apples are in season in Australia so they inspired my baking this week. I made an Apple Crumble Slice – it consists of a cake like base, a layer of cinnamon flavoured apple, and then finished off with a crumble topping. It is delicious served either warm or cold, with a dusting of icing sugar.
5 apples (I used a combination of granny smith and royal gala)
1 tablespoon butter
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon sugar
Base:
100 g (0.9 stick) butter
110 g (1/2 cup) caster (superfine ) sugar
1 egg
1 cup plain (150 g) plain (all purpose ) flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
Preheat oven to 160 deg C (320 deg F). Grease and line a 20 x 30 cm slice pan.
To make the crumble: mix the flour, baking powder, and sugar in a bowl. Rub in the butter until it resembles fresh breadcrumbs.
To make the apple filling: peel and chop apples. Place all ingredients into a saucepan and cook over low heat for 10 minutes, or until softened. Allow to cool.
To make the base: Combine the butter and sugar in an electric mixer and beat until creamy. Add the egg and beat well. Fold through the flour, baking powder, and milk.
Spread the base in the bottom of prepared pan. Top with apple filling, and then spoon over the crumble topping. Bake in oven for 40 – 50 minutes or until golden.
I must try this one. Apple season is here so your recipe will be just perfect. By the way, I have made your custard shortbreads, and they were fantastic! (I even did a post on my blog) Thanks for the recipes girls!
Your photos look amazing. Very clean and appetizing. I’d love to try out this recipe sometime. I would love if you check out my baking blog: Pass the Cocoa.
I made this Apple Crumb yesterday and it turned out great! I will be making this recipe often! Thank you for sharing this great recipe! Much appreciated too!
Out of all the recipes I looked at this reminds me of my Nanna’s apple crumble. Fingers crossed I do it right & it tastes as good as it looks in these pictures.
Hi Tania – I am sure you could experiment with cake mix for the bottom layer. Tinned apples would work well – just add some cinnamon for extra flavour. Happy baking!
Very nice. A little fiddly with the two steps for the base and crumble whereas other recipes having the same mixture for Both which is halved. I used wholemeal plain flour for the crumble to add a nutty texture. The base was very sticky and buttery and very hard to spread out on the tray but very nice flavour.
These are absolutely delicious. I make these every year for our Macmillan coffee morning and everyone always comments on how good they are. Soooooo scrummy. For our fathers day dinner in a couple of weeks my dad has requested this for pudding – everyone loves it!
This is THEE easiest and most delicious crumble. I make it regularly. Delicious cold as a slice but even more so heated with a big dollop of cream. Reminds me of my Nanas baking xxx
Our kids love it!!
Ohhh I was going to make an Apple & Cherry crumble for tea today might adapt it to this looks yummy thanks for the post 🙂
Lisa / Sarah,

I made this with apples and mulberries. Absolutely divine!
Sounds delicious!
How long will it last in the fridge? I would love to make this for an event in 2 days?
Hi Sam – I have made this and frozen it if I need it in advance. It would probably still be fine int he fridge for a couple of days.
Can you use tinned apples and add sultanas to the middle also can you use a cake mix for the bottom layer as you do with apples sour cream slice ??
