Crochet Granny Square Pillow

August 23, 2014 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 5 Comments

Crochet Granny Square Pillow

Sarah is counting down until the end of high school – only 88 days to go! In that time she has 14 more exams to get through.  When I took a break from studying in Year 12, my reward was to work on a crochet blanket I was making. I made a colourful granny square rug over my final months of school that we still use today. Crochet is such a good stress buster activity. With its easy repetition, it is a very calming craft activity.

Sarah asked for a crochet lesson a few weeks ago and I was happy to oblige! She has been crocheting in front of the TV each night as a way of winding down after a day of school. She has just finished her first project, a granny square pillow, made from two granny squares that alternate rows of white and pink yarn. She used Moda Bettle yarn from Spotlight which is 50% cotton/50% acrylic. It is a nice soft yarn that crochets well.

Granny Square PillowShe did a great job and picked up the basics of crochet quickly. She has now started on her second project, a granny square rug. I have been keeping her company on the sofa each night as I work on my own crochet project.

Hi Fearnie – this granny square pillow is made from two identical granny squares that are stitched together around the outside. Three sides were stitched, thent he cushion inserted, and the remaining side was stitched up. When it needs washing we will remove the stitching on one side and remove the insert.

Hi, can you recommend any great books or websites for someone wanting to learn to crochet? I’d love to learn but dont have anyone to teach me! The cushion is gorgeous, congratulations!

Hi Jessica – Crochet is quite easy to learn. I would suggest you visit your library and get out some beginner crochet books. You could also google “beginner crochet” or “basic Crochet” on youtube to see a recording of how to form the basic stitches. A granny square rug or pillow is a good beginner project. Good luck! Lisa
