Book Review: Sew Up a Home Makeover

February 16, 2012 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 2 Comments

Sew Up a Home Makeover, by Lexie Barnes, arrived at the perfect time for me. After living in the same home for just over 8 years (a record for me as during our 21 years of marriage we have lived in 4 countries, 6 Cities, and moved 14 times)  it is time for a bit of an update.

Sew Up a Home Makeover includes 50 simple sewing projects to transform your space. The projects are inexpensive to make and can be easily customized to suit your taste and furniture proportions. The book includes a helpful section to read before you get started. It helps you identify your style, function, comfort, and budget goals; and encourages you to take an inventory of what you already have – chances are some of it can be re-purposed or altered to fit in with your room make over.

The projects are designed for anyone with a basic sewing knowledge. The book also includes a tips and techniques section which serves as a helpful reference. The projects include everything from cushions and slipcovers, lampshades, basket liners, wall art, napery, and duvet (doona) covers. There is plenty of inspiration for every room in your home.

Some of my favourite projects include:

Folding Organiser

Kids Room with Bed Canopy and Marshmallow Cushion

Nursery with Tulle Canopy, Box Cushion, Felt Mobile, and Appliqué Blanket.

I would love to win this! We have just moved for the second time in 6 months and will have to move again in another 9 months and my house is seriously laking in some design savvy. It’s looking very tired.

Maybe it's just me, but I think every sewist has a Maybe it's just me, but I think every sewist has a piece of fabric they're a little afraid to cut into.

You know the one.

The fabric that's too pretty, too special, or waiting for the perfect project.

I've certainly been guilty of saving beautiful Liberty fabrics for "someday". But over the years I've realised something:

The joy isn't in owning the fabric.

The joy is in turning it into something you'll use, display, gift, or enjoy every day.

Some of my favourite sewing projects began with a Liberty fabric I was hesitant to cut into. Looking back, I've never regretted using it. The only fabrics I've regretted are the ones that sat folded away for years waiting for the perfect moment.

Beautiful fabric deserves to become something beautiful.

This Mini Drawstring Bag is perfect for Halloween treats, small gifts, sewing notions, or party favours. The roomy base helps it stand upright, while the drawstring closure keeps everything tucked safely
inside.

Best of all, it's a fantastic scrap-busting project. You'll only need four layer cake squares and a length of cord, and most sewists can finish one in under an hour.

I stitched this spooky version using Halloween prints, but the pattern works beautifully for Christmas, birthdays, Easter gifts, and everyday storage too.
