Zakka Handmades {Book Review and Giveaway}

July 10, 2013 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 167 Comments

Zakka Handmades by Amy Morinaka contains a delightful collection of 24 projects sewn from natural fabrics to help organise, adorn, and simplify your life. Zakka is a Japanese term that refers to small household goods used in everyday life.We were so pleased when Amy asked us to be part of her blog tour to promote her new book. We have been following Amy’s blog, Chick Chick Sewing for many years and we love her clever zakka style projects and tutorials.

Zakka Handmades is divided into four sections – Everday Zakka, Bags and Pouches Zakka Style, Baby abnd Young Child Zakka, and Handmade Kitchen Zakka. There is a wide range of lovely sewing projects, many suited to the beginner sewer. Some of our favourite include the Matryoshka Doll Key Cover, Airmail Mug Rug, Insulated Bento Lunch Bag, and the Crochet Doiley and Linen Pouch. The project instructions are very clear and there are helpful diagrams, tips, and photos to guide you in the construction process. Templates for all projects are included in the rear of the book. Amy has a wonderful eye for detail and the projects all have sweet finishing touches and embellishments.

Amy is originally from Japan and throughout the book she shares some interesting snippets and traditions from Japanese life which give the projects more meaning. We love everything Japanese and really enjoyed reading these notes.

There are so many inspiring and practical projects to make from Zakka Handmades. We made the Mini Drawstring Pouch from the book. We love how the pouch lining forms a decorative edge to the drawstring pouch. We altered the pattern slightly so that more of the lining was shown which suited the gingham lining fabric that we used.

The drawstring pouch is perfectly sized to store all manner of things. I have been using it to store a small embroidery hoop and thread as I work on a new cross stitch project.

If you would like to be in the running to win your own copy of Zakka Handmades, leave a comment on this post. Giveaway is open worldwide. Entries close on July 17th. The winner will be notified by email and announced here on the blog.
