Every January, I choose a word to guide my creativity for the year ahead â a quiet compass that helps me stay focused, intentional, and inspired. This year, my word is Elevated. It arrived gently, but once it settled in, it felt exactly right for the season Iâm stepping into.
Why âElevatedâ?
Over the past few years, Iâve found so much joy in simple, scrapâfriendly projects â the kind you can sew in an afternoon and gift with love. But as my creative practice has grown, Iâve felt a pull toward slowing down just a little, paying closer attention to the details, and choosing materials and techniques that bring me joy.
âElevatedâ isnât about perfection. Itâs about intention.
Elevating the Process
For me, elevating my sewing means:
- choosing fabrics that spark joy
- taking an extra moment to press seams beautifully
- finishing edges with care
- adding small touches that make a project feel special
These tiny decisions transform even the simplest make into something that feels thoughtful and complete.
Elevating the Experience
I want 2026 to be a year where creativity feels calm, spacious, and enjoyable. A year where I make fewer rushed projects and more meaningful ones. A year where I savour the process as much as the finished piece.

I actually changed using a word a year last year, I switched to a word a month. I found that sometimes I got fed up of the one word, particularly if it was a difficult year. Last year I chose a word a month and these included all kinds of words such as celebrate, books, create, health. It was just a word to focus on for a short time. I have begun this year with gentle as my word, to remind myself to be gentle with myself and to have a more relaxed start to the year.
