Why Solid Fabrics are a game changer for Foundation Paper Piecing.

March 10, 2025 By A Spoonful of Sugar - Leave a Comment

Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is such a fun and rewarding quilting technique, and using solid fabrics can make the process even more enjoyable—especially for beginners! Solid fabrics are not only beautiful, but they also simplify the entire FPP experience.

Here’s why solid fabrics are a fantastic choice:

  • No Right or Wrong Side: Solids look the same on both sides, so you never have to worry about flipping your fabric the wrong way when aligning it with your FPP template.
  • Easy Fabric Placement: With no directional prints to manage, covering each section of your template becomes a breeze. No stress about upside-down patterns!
  • Clean and Bold Designs: Solid fabrics allow the piecing to shine, creating vibrant and crisp blocks that highlight the intricate designs you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
  • Seamless Corrections: If you need to make adjustments, solids eliminate the hassle of matching patterns, making the process far more forgiving.
  • Focus on Technique: By removing the complexities of directional prints and alignment, solid fabrics let you concentrate on honing your FPP skills.

To showcase the magic of solid fabrics, I’ve given our popular Sunburst block a fresh new look with a rainbow makeover! 🌈 This block, available in five sizes, is beginner-friendly and ideal for a variety of projects—think baby quilts, bags, pillows, and more!

For my latest project, I’m turning my rainbow Sunburst blocks into a vibrant pencil pouch. I used the Rainbow Solids Color Wheel Bundle from Connecting Threads, and it brought the perfect pop of color to my blocks. This cheerful palette is making the entire process a joy!

If you’re looking to explore the beauty of solid fabrics and try your hand at FPP, the Sunburst Quilt Block is available in our Pattern Store and Etsy Shop. Whether you’re new to FPP or a seasoned sewist, solid fabrics and the Sunburst block are a match made in quilting heaven.

What will you create with this beginner-friendly FPP block? Let’s celebrate the magic of solids and get stitching!
