Sweet Orchard Blog Tour

August 17, 2016 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 6 Comments

Sweet Orchard Fabric by Sedef Imer for Riley Blake Designs.

Welcome to the Sweet Orchard Blog Hop. Sweet Orchard is the pretty debut fabric collection by designer Sedef Imer from Down Grapevine Lane for Riley Blake Designs. In sweet shades of pink, blue, red, grey, yellow, and green; it features fruit, flowers, diagonal stripes, text, and more! It also includes a patchwork cheater print in three colourways. The small scale prints with pretty motifs are perfect for fussy cutting and English Paper Piecing.

I couldn’t resist making a trio of projects from this lovely fabric – a crochet bag, pincushion, and small zippered pouch to hold my stitch markers. Perfect set for some crochet on the go!

First up was this Zakka Dilly Bag. The pattern comes from my book, A Spoonful of Sugar. In fact I combined two of the book projects (the Zakka Dilly Bag and the Boutique Baby Bibs) to create this bag. Featuring a crocheted base, hexagon flower, and simple stitching detail, it is a great size for a small amigurumi project. It stands up by itself and also features a drawstring closure. I had the perfect small wooden red beads to finish it off. I used the patchwork cheater print for the hexagons – they provided small scale motifs to use on these small hexagons (3/4 inch sides).

The crocheted base is easily made and only requires knowledge of a couple of basic crochet stitches.

Scrappy Star Pincushion made in Sweet Orchard Fabric

Next I made a couple of Scrappy Star Pincushions. These are a fun patchwork project that will add some colour to your sewing room, and is the perfect gift for a craft loving friend. It is a modern take on the traditional French Biscornu style pincushions.

Made from cotton and linen “scraps”, it can be easily assembled in an afternoon and is a beginner friendly project. The hard part is stopping at one! You can find the PDF pattern for the Scrappy Star Pincushion in our Etsy store and Pattern Shop.

Finally, I made a little patchwork Triangle Pouch to hold stitch markers. This is our most popular tutorial and you can find the free pattern over on this blog post. This is a quick project and it is fun to add a ribbon tag, zipper pull or other embellishment to make it unique. I found the perfect apple zipper pull in my stash.
