Pretty Liberty Drawstring Pouch

January 4, 2016 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 6 Comments

Pretty Liberty Drawstring Pouch by A Spoonful of Sugar

Liberty Tana Lawn and white linen have been combined in these two Liberty Drawstring Pouches. They are constructed with a white linen outer, that has been embellished with a Grandmothers Flower garden block made from little Liberty hexies made using the English Paper Piecing method. The lining is folded to the front to create a drawstring channel.

The Pretty Liberty Drawstring Pouch is made using our Pretty Drawstring Pouch sewing tutorial. It is an easy, beginner friendly project.  For this version, I made 7 small hexagons using assorted Liberty prints. Liberty Tana Lawn is perfect for small projects like paper piecing.

The small scale Liberty prints work well in these hexagons which have been made from hexagon papers with 3/4 inch sides.

The hexagons are hand stitched together to form a flower. I always lightly press the hexagons from the back before removing the papers. I use fine 50 wt thread when stitching them together so that the stitching is almost invisible. I used Aurifil 50 wt for this project.

I made the pouch using our Pretty Drawstring Pouch tutorial.   I have made loads of these pouches over the years.

I hand-stitched the hexagon unit to the lower right side after the pouch was constructed, being careful to stitch only to the top layer of fabric. It would be easier to stitch it on before the pouch construction.

Lastly I threaded the ribbon through the drawstring channel. The pouch measures 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches which is a good size for a small gift or to hold a few sewing/paper piecing supplies.

They look so pretty with my vintage threads.

Thanks Kim! I love my vintage spools – some came from Paris and some from Kyoto. They are my favourite vintage haberdashery items. Best wishes for 2016.
