Dresden Shoe Bag

April 11, 2015 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 13 Comments

dresden plate

I love the look of dresden plates and they are great way to incorporate lots of fabric scraps into a project. I made my first one a few months ago (you can see a photo on this post).  Making my own template using a compass and protractor was fiddly so I recently invested in a dresden ruler which makes cutting the blades much simpler. It was fun experimenting with pink scraps from my 2 1/2 inch scrap tub (you can see my scrap organisation method here). I used a ruler that was 22.5 degrees. The finished dresden plate measured 6 3/8 inches across. I think I may like to go a bit smaller next time.

The pink and yellow look so cheery together! It puts a modern twist on a traditional quilt block.

I added some stitching detail and ricrac trim.

The scrappy dresden plate became a drawstring shoe bag which are great when travelling. I used our Travel Shoe Bag tutorial which is sized for women’s shoes. (We also have a men’s Shoe Bag tutorial.) These are great gifts for travellers and can be used for shoes, pyjamas, lingerie, or for anything else that needs organising in your suitcase.

I am planning a few more dresden projects using my fabric scraps.

I love everything about this post! The colours and the styling in your photos are just gorgeous. And the Dresden itself is so pretty. I love your hand stitching. I only wish I was as neat as you! Keep the eye candy coming please…

Cute idea! I love making dresdens, too, and have a few tucked in my basket for a rainy day.

That is really pretty. It would be some special pair of shoes to grace that bag! Thanks for the inspiration!

I am still using an old card pattern from the 80’s with the curved tops. I do have a modern plastic template but have yet to use it. I enjoy your tutorials and plan to make the business card wallet.

P.S. I do not blog or have a web site (whatever that is). I do send photos of things that I make using different tutorials, but understand if my messages are never opened for security reasons.

Hi Pat – I love the curved top Dresdens – so sweet. Glad you enjoy our projects! I think your emails but have been filtered into our spam folder as we haven’t seen any of them – sorry about that! I will mark your email address as safe and hopefully that will stop that happening in future 🙂 Have a great weekend, Lisa
