Steamer Sewing Kit

June 16, 2017 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 5 Comments

Make a sewing kit using a bamboo steamer basket

Bamboo steamer baskets make ideal sewing kits – they are the perfect size to hold all the materials and supplies for a small project, are lightweight, and can be stacked. You can find them at Asian supermarkets, chain stores, kitchen stores, or on Amazon. I found this 6 inch steamer at Daiso, the Japanese 100 Yen store – perfect for my steamer sewing kit.

Bamboo steamer baskets have gaps in the bottom for the steam to pass through when cooking. If you are using them to hold small supplies, cut a piece of felt to line the bottom of the baskets, and then fill with your favourite supplies. They are surprisingly roomy – and hold lots of supplies.

I have stacked some of my favourite vintage haberdashery items in my basket – wooden cotton reels, buttons, cloth tape measure, linen thread, handmade lace, scissors and more.

The mini Bonne Maman jars are the perfect size to hold some pins and buttons. I can’t resist the sweet gingham lids. I use a lot of these jars in my sewing room for storage. Check out our Bonne Maman Pinterest page for more ideas on how to use these fun jars.

A sewing kit is a fun gift to assemble for a friend who loves to sew or who is getting started on their sewing/quilting journey. A few carefully selected tools and supplies can ignite creativity. I am going to keep a few steamer baskets ready for when I need to assemble a gift in a hurry.

My steamer sewing kit was inspired by Martha Stewart’s Steamer Basket upgrade.  For more inspiration on creative sewing kits/baskets, check out our Sewing Storage Pinterest Page.

That’s a really nice idea! I have sewing bits and pieces in several different places – I should get organized so I can actually find what I’m looking for.

You’re in Perth right? Is there a Dasio here now?

This is a cool idea! I have to sew from time to time, and have a few colors thread and a couple needles, scissors, but nothing “organized”! And, of course, when I need something, I can’t find the “kit” or most parts of it! I found some of those fruit jars in a 50g size. I think they’re smaller than yours, but I can’t quite make out the label. Wish me luck 🍀!

    Regards, Bill
