How to Make Cinnamon Rolls + Giveaway

June 27, 2013 By A Spoonful of Sugar - 59 Comments

Sponsored By Nuffnang

Life has been pretty hectic here recently – both the teens have had exams, work has been busy, and it is sometimes a struggle to keep up with all the household cleaning in between ferrying kids to school and their part time jobs etc. We love to bake, but sometimes the thought of all the cleaning up afterwards can put you off, especially with messy recipes like Cinnamon Rolls.

We like to keep our kitchen clean and germ free, without too much fuss. Each Saturday we do a thorough clean of the kitchen. In between we use Mr Muscle Touch-Up on the bench tops to keep them clean, shiny, and germ free. We have granite bench tops and other products we have used have left a filmy residue that make the granite look dull. Mr Muscle Touch-Up cleaner is easy to use, is antibacterial (killing 99% of germs), and makes our bench tops shine.

We keep Mr Muscle Touch-Up on the counter so that it is easily accessible to clean up small messes as they arise. Simply pump it onto some paper towel (or your kitchen cloth) and clean up spills as they happen. Super easy and quick. It has a nice fresh scent.

We put Mr Muscle Touch-Up to the test when we made some Cinnamon Rolls with a Maple Glaze.
Before we got started on the Cinnamon Rolls, we gave the bench top a quick wipe with Mr Muscle Touch-Up to make sure it was clean and germ free.

Once the dough had risen, it was rolled out on a floured surface and covered with cinnamon sugar. While the rolls were rising, the excess flour and sugar was quickly wiped away with a damp cloth. Then we pumped Mr Muscle Touch-Up on a paper towel and cleaned up the bench top in no time. All traces of smudged flour, greasy butter, and sticky sugar were gone – we were left with a super shiny bench – we could even see our reflection on the bench!

Cinnamon Rolls with a Maple Glaze

If your busy family needs some nurturing, you can’t go past these wonderfully delicious Cinnamon Rolls. They are so light and fluffy, with a wonderful swirl of cinnamon sugar in the dough, and then topped with a browned butter maple glaze. They smell so scrumptious and were heavenly to eat. The hard part is stopping at one!
Dough:
1/4 cup warm water
7 g (1 package) dry yeast
3/4 cup lukewarm milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 large egg, at room temperature
60 g (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened
3 1/2 cups flour
Filling
2 Tbsp butter, melted
1/4 cup sugar
2 1/2 tsp cinnamon
Glaze
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 cup Icing sugar (powdered/confectioners’ sugar)
3 Tbsp maple syrup
2 Tbsp low-fat milk

Combine warm water and yeast in a small bowl; stand for 5 minutes. Combine  milk, sugar, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a beater attachment. Stir in egg and butter on low speed until combined, then stir in yeast mixture. Mix in 2 cups of flour until incorporated; gradually add remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until dough feels tacky but doesn’t stick to your fingers. Attach dough hook to your stand mixer, and knead dough for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic (you may need to add additional flour, 1 tablespoon at a time). The dough is ready when it pulls away from the bottom of the mixer bowl.

Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray and cover with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size (approximately  1 hour). Turn dough onto  lightly floured bench and roll into an 30 x 45 cm (18 x 12-inch)  rectangle. Brush dough with melted butter, leaving a 0.5 cm (1/4-inch)  border. Combine sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle sugar mixture over dough. Roll dough up into a tight log and pinch edges to seal. Trim off uneven ends, then score log every 2.5 cm (1 inch)  and use a sharp knife to slice crosswise into 18 equal slices. Place rolls cut side up into a 13 x 9-inch baking pan coated with cooking spray. Cover with plastic and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately  60 minutes.

Preheat oven to 175 °C (350°F). Bake rolls for 18-20 minutes, until tops are golden. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 5 minutes. To make glaze, place butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until it foams, turns clear, and then turns a deep brown, about 6 minutes. Cool slightly. Sift icing sugar into a small bowl; whisk in browned butter, maple syrup, and milk until smooth. Pour glaze over warm rolls; glaze will set as rolls cool. Serve warm.

Bon appétit!

The worst kitchen mess I have had was when I had 6 sticks of butter and 1/2 cup crisco beating at high speed in my KitchenAid. A dishtowel dropped down into the mixer and wrapped around the blade proceeding to sling butter from the ceiling to the floor in my kitchen… What a mess!

My girls had this science kit and were making some sort of gel project. They started arguing over who got to mix the gel. Arguing turned into a tug-o-war and next thing I know the bowl is spinning and flying with gel is exploding in the air. There were are miniscule, sticky gel beads splattered all over my entire kitchen. It tool me an hour to clean it up!

I’m thinking Christine wins hands down! Sad to say my kitchen looks like a bomb has hit it most weeks. I don’t like doing dishes, work long hours and don’t have a dish washer so my 70s kitchen is a bit of a permanent disarter. Cleaning it up is always on the to do list, but the sewing machine is in view in the formal dining room area so precious minutes are spent in there or online when I should be cleaning up!

We had just moved into a new house and I didn’t ‘know’ the refrigerator very well so didn’t have a clue that it ran too cold. We bought a 6 pack of soda and all the other ‘first time’ stuff you need when you are moving. The cans for the 6 pack were put on the bottom shelf and in the door. You know where this is going? The next morning I opened the refrigerator to get out some milk and heard pop! pop! The soda had frozen and 4 of the 6 cans had popped their tops when I opened the door~ I had sticky soda over everything in the refrigerator, myself, the floor and seeping under. Waaa! Moving is hard in the best of times, but that was downright horrible!
Your cinnamon rolls sound yummy! 🙂

That’s not difficult. I made a big bowl of spaghettisauce en put it in a glass bowl. Walked with it to the table and it slipped of my hands. Glass everywhere between the red sauce with veggies. And I saw it moving to my WHITE carpet in the living room….. Yikes.
At that point the doorbell rings and my parents where there for the dinner I wanted to impress them with….
Makes me blush everytime I think of it.

The biggest mess I have ever had to clean up (with help from the culprits) was the time I left my kitchen window open while I went shopping.
Our boys were riding (and skidding) their pushbikes around in the yard and spraying up fine dust that, of course filtered through the window screen and coated everything in the kitchen in a fine dust.
And then it rained and the boys didn’t close the window and the rain came in through the window and turned the fine layer of dust into a fine layer of mud….!!!!
Of course, the sink had freshly washed dishes on it and the pantry door was open too..
It took FOREVER to clean everything down

Basically any time my son gets in the kitchen to fix himself something to eat.

He’s no longer a child, so independence is great and to be encouraged.

However, he still has a lot to learn about cleaning as you, or better still, DON’T MAKE A MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Not an Aus resident (ex Perth resident now in UK), so not commenting for comp. Just a comment on how I varied my cinnamon rolls recipe (traditional Xmas morning breakfast in my house) last Xmas. I used the following addition:

    Maple Topping:
    1/2 cup Maple Syrup
    1/2 cup packed brown sugar
    1/3 cup butter
    1/4 teaspoon salt

Melted it all together and then poured it into the prepared baking tray, sprinkled over about a cup of chopped pecans then placed the cinnamon buns as usual on top of that. Invert onto a decent sized chopping board once baked. Sticky goodness.

For even more mess and fuss, instead of making buns with the dough, roll into pieces about 4″ long and 1-2″ thick, dip in melted butter and maple syrup mixture, then into sugar and cinnamon, and drop onto the above mix in the baking tray. Scatter the pieces so that they overlap randomly for fun tearing apart later. Bake as usual for cinnamon rolls. Those were made for NYD 🙂 The mess in the kitchen for the latter must be seen to be believed – have a sink of hot soapy water awaiting your hands!

I had a plastic grocery bag with bottles of spaghetti sauce in it. The bottom of the bag broke and the bottles fell, straight onto my foot, that didn’t break their fall though, they shattered everywhere! Glass, sauce and a bit of blood and it was everywhere. I was home alone, so had to clean it all up so no one cut themselves later and then took myself off to the Dr for xrays etc, not my best day!

My most wonderful “MESS” happened on the night before Thanksgiving…..one I will remember always. I was taking a very large pumpkin cheesecake out of the oven and the ring opened up and the bottom of the cake exploded on the floor, the oven, the sides of the cupboards….all over the place. It was like a very large “bomb”.
This happened 3 yrs. ago, and I am still finding splatter on parts of my kitchen.

The biggest mess I had ever had to clean up was when Mr then 2 decided to get into my container of food colouring! There was not a surface in the kitchen that wasn’t coloured. I put him in a bath to soak whilst I attempted to clean up the mess – but someone decided to paint the area around the bath tub. If that wasn’t bad enough – when he had finished his bath I sat him down in front of the TV whilst I cleaned the bathroom to only find him in a huge tub of margarine. It went everywhere. How I didn’t strangle him that day is beyond me.

I heard a bang, the water had evaporated, the can had exploded, thick, caramel goo dripped from every surface of my kitchen. My ceiling was spattered, the curtains, floor walls etc. Luckily I was not in the room as it was so hot i could have been badly burned. instead I was totally exhausted after cleaning for days.

If you’ve ever wanted to add eyelets or grommets t If you’ve ever wanted to add eyelets or grommets to your sewing projects, here’s a quick look at how I install them using my DK93 snap press. It’s the same tool I use for snaps — and it makes installing eyelets beautifully quick and consistent. For this Ribbon Pouch, I used the Liberty Gifts from the Garden collection (printed on Lasenby cotton and released in January 2026). The colours and motifs pair so well with the little ribbon tie detail. Here’s how to install the eyelets:Punch out the four holes using a hole‑cutting die.Place the eyelet into the hole.Press it into place using the snap press. That’s it — easy peasy, and it gives the pouch such an elevated, professional finish. I love how clean and sturdy the result is.Fabric is Gifts from the Garden by Liberty - kindly provided by @regent_street_fabrics — thank you!If you’d like the Ribbon Pouch pattern (it comes in 3 sizes), comment RIBBON and I’ll send the link straight to you.Ribbon Pouch Sewing Pattern: available in our Pattern Store and Etsy shop ( links in profile).#SewingInspiration #SewingProjects #Eyelets #Grommets #SnapPress
The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad & Placemat Set show The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad & Placemat Set showcases one of my favourite FPP designs — a stunning kaleidoscope‑style block that always turns out beautifully. Kaleidoscope blocks are some of my most popular FPP patterns, and this set is such a fun way to use them.  This set includes six sizes, making it incredibly versatile: use them as hot pads, trivets, placemats, or simply as a way to add a pop of colour to your kitchen. For these samples, I went with a monochromatic scrap‑busting approach, pairing fabrics from the same colour family with a low‑volume background. The black‑and‑white striped binding adds such a crisp, modern finish. It’s a wonderful project for building your FPP confidence — and a fantastic way to use up those treasured scraps. The Twirling Treasures Hot Pad set is our Pattern of the Week. It is currently 25% off this week in our Pattern Store and Etsy Shop.If you’d like to sew your own set, comment TWIRL and I’ll send the pattern link straight to you.Happy sewing!
