{Book Reviews} Home Sewn Home; & Tilda’s Spring Ideas

August 30, 2012 By Spoonful of Sugar - 4 Comments

Home Sewn Home: 20 Projects to Make for the Retro Home, by Sally Walton is a sweet book that has some lovely, practical home projects for lovers of vintage and retro. Most of the projects have been made with recycled vintage fabrics and supplies, which gives them a lovely charm and takes you back to your grandmother’s home.

Projects include: aprons, padded coat hangers, peg bag, wash bag, jewellery roll and more. What I love about this book is that it is enjoyable to look through – it has been printed on quality thick paper and has lots of sweet nostalgic props and details throughout. Most of all, it has full sized pattern sheets included in a pocket at the back of the book (a big plus for sewing books) and lots of tips throughout.

All the projects in the book are suitable for beginner and intermediate sewers. There is a helpful Supplies and Techniques section which guides you through the skills required to complete the projects. It has lots of step by step photos to guide you through the process so that you will get a lovely end product.

This is a great book for lovers of Vintage.

Two lovely books! I’m curious Lisa- have you ever had trouble with Fishpond deliveries? I ordered from them in mid-June and the book never turned up! Not sure I want to try them again!

Home Sewn Home is a great book – lots of cute, easy to make projects (I love the little doorstops).

@Patchwork and Play – I’ve had trouble with Fishpond too with books not arriving and not much communication, find places like Book Depository are much more reliable.

Although I hate to admit it, my vision is not as g Although I hate to admit it, my vision is not as good as it used to be. I struggle to thread needles at night. When @sohmo invited me to road test their new collection of needles, I was intrigued to try the Easy Thread Needles.

The needles have a clever indention on top of the eye - you push down with the thread and voila! A quickly threaded needle without the need for needle threaders etc. I am working on a new project with lots of buttons and the needle worked perfectly.

SOHMO Easy-thread needles include three sizes in the pack - 5 gauge, 6 gauge and 7 gauge and are suitable for quick mending tasks, sewing on buttons, and embroidery.

These needles are pretty and practical! The best part is they come in super cute little tins with a sliding lid (I have a weakness for attractive packaging!) There are 5 different needle types available to suit a variety of needs. Needles are made in Japan and are strong and sharp.

Have you discovered a new sewing product recently? Please share below in the comments - I love learning about new sewing tools/gadgets to make life easier.
